Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) is an inflammatory disease with
a strong allergic and possible psychological component. It differs from other well-known inflammatory skin diseases and shares some immunological similarities with Asthma. Atopic Dermatitis tends to cause patches of dry skin that can become itchy, red, and inflamed. These patches often appear in the creases of the elbows and knees and on the face, neck, and wrists. Scratching the patches can worsen the itching and make the skin ooze clear fluid. Over time, repeated scratching or rubbing can cause the patch of skin to thicken. This is known as lichen simplex chronicus (LSC). Due to impaired structure of the most outer layer of skin, proper hydration and outer skin structure improvement is essential for treatment. Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic or relapsing skin disorder caused by complex interactions between genetic, immunological and environmental factors; it is characterized by chronic inflammation, disruption of the epithelial barrier, immunological abnormalities and increased serum IgE. The epidermis of Atopic Dermatitis patients displays a significant barrier disruption and transepidermal water loss, which sensitizes eczema skin to allergen penetration, bacterial, fungal, and virus invasion or colonization and consequently inflammation. Various mechanisms are responsible for the barrier defect in eczema. Oat has been used for millennia as food in many cultures and for centuries as mean to alleviate the skin symptoms such as itching and skin irritation resulting from various diseases causing these conditions, in form of oat baths. Nowadays, technology allows us to use Colloidal Oatmeal extracts/preparations in form of creams, gels and lotions in order to simulate such effects. Based on the FDA OTC skin protectant monograph, the 2% of Colloidal Oatmeal, as used in Eczema cream is enough to achieve a prompt temporary relief of itchy, sore, sensitive skin due to Eczema. Colloidal Oatmeal is supported by Cannabidiol, Gamma linolenic acid, Quercetin and (white) curcumin. Cannabidiol is a molecule found in hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) with several pharmacological actions. As seen in J Clin Invest. 2014 Sep;124(9):3713-24, CBD supports anti-inflammation and acts anti-oxidant and is therefore very good for eczematic skin. CBD is also used in cosmetics for skin protection and conditioning. Gamma Lionelic acid is found in the seeds of the Oenothera. The Oil of these seeds have already been used by the native Americans to treat skin disorders. It came to Europe after the discovery of the continent of America. Recently, the EMA investigated on Oenothera as a clinical product. The product is used in cosmetic products as a skin soothing agent (J Nutr. 2002 Oct;132(10):3090-7). Quercetin is a strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient in cosmetics. Curcumin is a very well known herbal extract used for inflammation and as anti-oxidant. It heals and prevents dry skin. Oberglatt, 17th September 2019
