1.0 Introduction

Kampung Triboh is located at Jalan Gedong in Serian and 56.4km away from UNIMAS. It takes
about 1 hour to arrive at Kampung Triboh. Moreover, Kampung Triboh is an Iban community, and
this village has a unique tradition and culture. The uniqueness of Kampung Triboh makes us want
to learn more about the traditions and culture of this community. In this project, we aim to
document and preserve the unique traditions of the community at Kampung Triboh to ensure they
are passed down to future generations and for education purposes.

2.0 Statement of Problem or Justification for choosing the community

We chose Kampung Triboh because of the uniqueness of the Iban Remun community. After the
survey and discussions with the local champion, we realised that the Iban Remun community is
unique because of their tradition. In Iban Remun, they have their own way of making “Jadi Mali”
compared to the Iban communities outside there. This is because they have a river to eliminate bad
luck, especially for those who marry close relatives. Although it is the same Iban community, but
the tradition was a little different. Because of this uniqueness in Kampung Triboh, we decided to
put more effort into preserving the traditions of this community.

3.0 Purpose or Objective

a. The purpose of doing this project is to document, preserve, and promote Kampung Triboh’s
tradition to gain a deep understanding of how this tradition developed over time and why it is
specific to Kampung Triboh also develop a strategy to preserve and protect this tradition from
potential cultural.

b. We created a short video to educate outsiders about the uniqueness of the Kampung Triboh
tradition and raise awareness among this community. A video will develop a sustainable long-
term plan to ensure the continued preservation of the tradition within the community, passing
it down to future generations.

4.0 Definition of Terms

Jadi Mali

“Jadi Mali” is a ritual is considered almost sacred because it may bring dishonour to a family. In
principle, “Jadi Mali” is the unacceptable act of marrying one’s close relatives such as an uncle or
an aunt. To eliminate bad luck, the couple need to do “Jadi Mali” which is the couple is “bathed in
swine blood.”

Traditional Culture

Traditional is following or belonging to the customs or ways of behaving that have continued in a
group of people or society for a long time. Culture is the way of life, especially the general customs
and beliefs, of a particular group of people.

Iban

Iban is beliefs used by the Iban people since ancient times. Their great different culture and beliefs
usually focus on animistic and traditional spiritual practises. Individuals and different subgroups
within the community may have different Iban beliefs and practises.

2
5.0 Project Contribution & Expectation

Project Contribution

The contribution of the project is the preservation of the unique tradition of Kampung Triboh
within the Iban Remun community by documenting, understanding, protecting and promoting this
tradition. The project contributes to passing on the tradition to future generations and educating
outsiders about the uniqueness of Kampung Triboh. It also educates both the local community and
outsiders about the uniqueness of the Kampung Triboh tradition. This educational component
promotes awareness and appreciation of the unique cultural practices of the Iban. In addition, by
developing a long-term plan, the project ensures that the traditions will continue to be maintained
by the community after the project is completed. This contribution is the key for the continued
survival of the cultural tradition.

Project Expectation

The project expects that the unique tradition of Kampung Triboh will be effectively preserved and
protected from loss. At the same time, it can increase awareness of outsiders, and the public will
gain a better understanding and appreciation of the Kampung Triboh tradition through the
education and awareness-raising initiatives. In addition, the project may look for partnerships and
support from the local community and stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of the
tradition. Lastly, we expect to publish documentation, reports, and videos that can be used for
future reference, research, and continued support of the tradition.

6.0 Scope and limitations

The Iban people of Sarawak, Malaysia, and their "jadi mali" culture formed the focus of this
ethnographic study's scope and limitations. Understanding Iban beliefs and worldviews is the main
goal of the research, especially in relation to Penganan, a traditional Iban dish. Geographically, it
is restricted to four distinct locations, such as Betong, Limbang, Lubok Antu, and Sri Aman. These
locations were selected to offer a range of perspectives from different Iban communities. The goal
of the project is to preserve and archive the "jadi mali" belief as an intangible cultural legacy,
despite religious conversions to other faiths. But because it is unique to Iban culture, it might not
apply to other indigenous groups, cover every Iban settlement, or go in-depth into the causes of
religious conversions.

The project focuses on documenting and preserving the specific cultural tradition of Kampung
Triboh and highlights its unique aspects within the Iban Remun community. During this project,
we will collect data or information about the unique cultural and traditions in Kampung Triboh by
interviewing the local champion related to the tradition. Moreover, an important aspect of the
project is the development of a sustainable plan to ensure that the tradition is preserved and passed
on to future generations. In addition, we will document, preserve, and promote the uniqueness of
this community to increase awareness of the tradition within and outside the community.

The limitation of this project is the time frame, as this project only has a 14 week time frame, which
may limit the depth of research and the scope of preservation efforts. It's important to manage time
effectively. In addition, this project may be limited by our finances as we need to collect RM 100
for each person investing in this project to pay for our expenses such as homestay, car rental and
petrol, food, and more. Lastly, we need equipment such as a microphone and camera to develop a
video because it may affect our video quality without any equipment. for example, the surrounding
noise will be recorded in the video without a microphone.
