Wooden Box & Laser

Orthographic &
Sketchup
• First start off by creating an orthographic. A
orthographic is basically a structure of how you are
going to set up the box. The same thing goes for a
house, we need a sketchup before building it. Once
you get the orthographic approved by the teacher
then proceed onto making the design of the box on
the app sketchup. Get all the right measurements
and sides for the box correct and then get it
approved and get you piece of wood. The box you
are making has to have a meaning and why it was
valve. For mine, I created a document box where, I
could put any important papers in. Have a idea on
why this box holds valuable meaning to you.

Choosing the Type
of Wood
Cutting the wood into separate pieces
• After getting all the measurements from your sketchup and orthographic your supervisor will
glive you a piece according to the size you request. Once you get your piece then you move onto the
miter saw. You are going to cut the long piece of wood into 4 smaller pieces. Using a ruler and mitter
stop blocker you are going to get the exact measurement and follow all the safety precautions and get
the teacher to help you out when making the cut and make sure everything is properly adjusted.
Doing the
Dato
Sanding and Raising the
Grain
• Once you are done your Dato you move onto
sanding. You want to have a flat surface as the table
can be uneven. Use a mat or another planed piece
of wood to put your piece on. First start off by using
60 then move onto 100 then 320. Make sure not to
spend too much time on each piece as it can shrink
the size of your pieces. Once you sand at 320 you
are going to make all of the pieces wet. Use a wet
paper and sqeeze it then rub it on all over the flat
side and make sure to do both side. Do the same
process for all the pieces and when you make the
pieces wet do not put them down on the ground or
the table as other particles can enter the piece of
wood and ruin the piece. Hold the piece in your
hand and shake it around until it is dry then sand all
the pieces at 320 once more,
Using the Table Saw for Rabbed
• When doing the rabbed we do not need a exact
measurement when doing the rabbed. Pick a side
when doing the rabbed then adjust it so that the cut
goes all the way down to the dato. Take a look at the
picture provided and adjust your table saw to the exact
measurement. We need the exact measurement when
we know the size of our base and we need to get our
base beforehand, and make sure it fits exact to your
base.
Glueing All The
Pieces Together
Using the Lazer
• Move onto using the lazer as it saves time and adds more meaning to our box. Choose something
that relates to you and it has to have meaning to you. Change the image to large and check the pixel
size if it fits onto your box. Save your picture onto a USB. I chose to do Shelby picture as it holds much
meaning to me because I like snakes and especially a Shelby is my dream car.

Finding The Right Pieces For Your Lid &
Glueing Them
• You have to scanvege for the right pieces for your lid. You have to look for
the rights pieces that have the same width. You have to find the pieces from
the back of the woods room and it may take half and hour or more depending
on the size and quality of wood you choose or find from back there. I already
had extra wood from the beginning of my project and I was able to use that
and find 4 other pieces and get them approved by Mr. Spiers and glue them
together. After leaving them glued for a day we are going to scrape off the
excess glue coming out of the combined lid and use the planer if it is uneven.
You can also use the table saw to make the lid perfect and get rid of that
excess wood. Also you need to use a board feet calculator and figure out the
price of the wood you are using and let Mr. Spiers know. My total board feet
were 7.88 dollars. Also for my pieces they were uneven from the sides so, I
used the table saw to make them perfect and so that they would glue on
perfectly.
• Once you are done glueing you are going to
scrape off that glue on your box and lid. Use a
scraper to get the job done. If there is glue
that is coming out of your box use a razor to
scrape it off. After that you can use the planer
to make your lid perfect and I also used the
table saw to cut off excess wood. Next use
the belt disk sander the make your box
perfect then move onto using the thickness
sander to make the top of your box fully
smooth and same goes to the bottom. Then it
will not have a uneven size and the top will be
perfect so that the lid fits in.
