This is a test of knowledge of
words and spelling. There are
five pictures of objects, each
accompanied by the word for
the object given as jumbled
letters. The candidate must
write the word for each object.
Dashes indicate the number of
letters in an answer.
How to approach the task
Children should have practice in
writing all the words in the
Starters vocabulary list. Remind
candidates that they must only
use the letters provided when
doing this part. Practice by
doing spelling exercises and
anagrams in class.

Prepare materials according to the instructions in the ‘materials’ section.
Procedure
Lead-In (5mins)
Sorting Hobbies – Teacher puts students into 2 lines. Each group has a set of flashcards
beside them, comprised of the target vocabulary and distractors. Teacher divides board
into 2 sections: hobbies and other. 1 example is given for each category. The first 2
students take a flashcard and race to place it in the correct category.
1. Pre-Teach (Choose ONE) (10mins)
Penalty Shootout – Students are put in two teams. Teacher sticks target vocabulary on
the board. Teacher marks out a goal below the board with 2 baskets and a penalty spot.
Teacher calls a word and students race to slap it. The first student to do so gets to shoot
the ball, the other student is the goalkeeper. Tally the goals, let students count them and
announce the winner.
Alternatively, Basketball – Teacher sticks target vocabulary on the board. Remove the
bag from the bin and place it below the board. Teacher marks a free throw line on the
floor. Teacher calls out a word. The first student to slap the correct flashcard can shoot
the ball at the bin. Tally the points and let students count them and announce the winner.
2. Recognise Form (10mins)
Straw Race – Students form 2 lines at 1 end of the room. At the other end, teacher
places word cards, 1 set for each line. Teacher gives the students a straw each (for
hygiene reasons, students also don’t like sharing them). Teacher shows the students a
flashcard and they race to pick up the word card by sucking air through the straw and
bringing it back to their team.
3. Group Practice (10mins)
Countdown – Teacher organises students into teams. Teacher distributes mini
whiteboards, pens and erasers. Teacher puts the bomb countdown timer on the
projector*** and sets it to 30 seconds – 1 minute (adjust time to student’s ability).
Teacher shows the students a flashcard with jumbled letters. Students unjumble the word
before the bomb blows up.
4. Communicative Practice (15mins)
Picture & Letter Cards – Teacher puts the students in pairs and gives them 1 copy of
picture cards and 2 copies of alphabet cards (some words have double letters). Teacher
calls out the first word. Students identify the card and use the alphabet cards to spell out
the word. Scaffold and support this activity on the whiteboard where needs be. Write the
required letters for each word on the board if students are struggling. Work through the
target vocabulary one by one.
Reflection (10mins)
Feedback & Error Correction – Go through some of the answers from the previous
activities. Elicit errors from students (ideally the student who made the error) and get
them to come to the board and correct it.
