Parents often give children everything they ask for and do what they like. Is it good for children? What
are the consequences when they grow up?
Modern parents are giving into children’s demands and buy them all the latest toys and gadgets. I would
argue that on no account can this parenting style bring any benefits for kids in the long run. Worse still,
this negative education would cause detrimental consequences when they reach adulthood.
First, overindulgence can be harmful to young children, both socially and developmentally. When kids
are provided with the latest must-have items, they are less likely to grasp the notion of sharing or
appreciation for their parents’ affection. Eventually, they interpret negative behaviors such as whining
or begging as a way to manipulate others. In addition, little do the young ones comprehend the value of
hard- earned money if adults keep showering them with spending splurges. Consequently, spoiled kids
can become insensitive to the needs of others, are prone to temper tantrum and have trouble deferring
gratification.
On the other hand, instant gratification could lead to adverse consequences in the future. Children who
are spoiled do not have to learn responsible behaviors. Nor do they understand the concept of
boundaries as adults and can develop problems such as gambling, overeating or drinking. Lacking in
emotional maturity and having poor problem-solving skills, these adults might flounder and become
unhappy with their lives. Furthermore, as overindulged and overprotected kids do not grasp the lesson
of giving and taking in a relationship, they can have difficulty in establishing and maintaining meaningful
friendships.
In short, sometimes effective parenting skills involve resisting the desire to give kids whatever they
want. Indeed, spoiled kids can lack life skills necessary to successfully negotiate the demands of
adulthood given that their troubles have always been tackled by parents’ money.

As the number of cars increases, more money has to be spent on road systems. Some people think the
government should pay for this. Others, however, think that the users should cover the costs. Discuss
and give your opinion.
The growing density of cars calls for a road improvement scheme. While some people argue that it is the
government’s responsibility to pay for road construction, I believe that car users should be charged for
the service.
To start with, there are some arguments put forth in support of the government’s spending on road
building and maintenance. First, an efficient road transport system plays a pivotal role in ensuring
smooth traffic flow, giving a boost in trade activities within the country and economic growth at large.
For example, modern road infrastructure has a crucial part to play in the rapid development of major
cities in the world such as New York or Paris. Furthermore, the convenience and safety of citizens should
be of paramount concern of the authority. Therefore, each level of government is obliged by law to
provide and maintain the national road network such as local roads, bridges or foot paths.
However, I strongly support the latter opinion that car commuters should cover the cost of road
infrastructure. Compared to walking or cycling which leave little visual damage on the road, cars
definitely take up more space on city streets, and high demand for car use in everyday life causes road
deterioration at an increasingly fast rate. For this reason, road building and expansion mostly facilitate
drivers so that they can travel safely and smoothly. Besides, car owners normally have significantly
higher income than others. Funding for new construction and repair, thus, is a form of lifting the
financial burden on less fortunate ones in order that the community as a whole can enjoy a better living
standard.
In conclusion, despite the fact that the government is responsible for national affairs in general including
road construction, I reckon that it is the moral and legal duty of car users to pay for their regular road
use and support poor individuals.

The exploration and development of safe alternatives to fossil fuels should be the most important global
priority today. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true to say that fossil fuels are still our main source of energy today, and as more countries develop
their industries and their economies, the scale of their use continues to grow.
However, we are now well aware of the consequences of relying on this energy source for our natural
environment. Global warming and the damage to the protective ozone layer are caused by carbon
dioxide and other by-products of fossil fuels. So I certainly agree that these problems are global rather
than national ones. They threaten our whole planet and no action by a single country could solve them.
Furthermore, these problems are urgent as nobody knows when our natural world will be so damaged
that it will no longer be able to support us. While some countries already use safer alternative energy
sources, such as wind, water or solar power, it seems that there has not been sufficient investment in
developing the technology to make such alternatives viable for all. So it should definitely be a global
priority to invest in such research and development. Obviously, there are other global priorities that we
also need to address, such as poverty and diseases. But while it may be the case that these problems are
just as important as the energy problem, there is a sense that time is ticking away for our planet and any
solutions to the energy issue will take some time to achieve.
So in conclusion, I agree that finding alternatives to fossil fuels is certainly the most pressing global
priority, if not the most important one for our world today.

to feel overworked and overwhelmed: cảm thấy quá sức và quá tải
Some people argue that job satisfaction is more important than job security, while others believe that
they cannot always expect job satisfaction, and a permanent job is more important. Discuss both these
views and give your own opinion. (Đề thi thật ngày 5/3/2020)
It is argued by some that job security is not as important as how satisfied we feel with what we do,
whereas others believe that we should do a job that frees us from unemployment stress and ensures we
have a stable income. I am personally in favour of the viewpoint of the first group.
People who like the idea of doing a permanent job say that, in today’s cut-throat labour market where
thousands of new graduates face unemployment annually, staying in the same job is a much safer
choice than switching jobs to find job satisfaction. The combination of the increasingly competitive job
market and the rising cost of living means that job security has become the most important
consideration for job seekers. Many people experience temporary unemployment after quitting their
previous jobs to look for new ones that offer a higher level of job satisfaction. For those who are primary
breadwinners, this is a risky decision.
Despite the above arguments, I feel that we should never stop looking for jobs that make us happy and
fulfilled. I personally believe that no matter how competitive the labour market is, there are always
enough jobs for everyone. Spending several months or even a year seeking a rewarding job is much
better than spending a lifetime stuck in a job that we are reluctant to do just because it is safe and
stable. My grandfather, for example, has always regretted not following the photography career that he
would have loved to have had; instead, he chose to be a teacher because of a stable monthly paycheck.
In conclusion, although some argue that a secure job is more important than a satisfying job, I am of the
opinion that we should always look for a job that brings us happiness and fulfilment rather than stability.

Childhood obesity is becoming a serious public health challenge in many nations. This essay will look at
the primary cause of this and suggest some possible solutions to this problem.
There are a number of reasons for the rising levels of childhood obesity. The first reason is unhealthy
eating habits. Children nowadays tend to consume too much fast food and soft drinks. These foods can
cause kids to gain weight quickly as they are very high in fat and sugars but low in vitamins and minerals.
Another reason is sedentary lifestyles. Children tend to watch TV, browse the internet or play computer
games instead of playing outside or doing sports. As a consequence, they are becoming increasingly
obese.
There are several actions that could be taken to mitigate the problem mentioned above. Firstly, it is
important for parents to control what their children eat to make sure that they have a healthy diet.
Parents should also educate them about the detrimental effect of an imbalanced diet so that they can
make healthier food choices. Secondly, unhealthy junk food should be banned from the school menu
and fast food advertising should be limited. Finally, it is necessary for parents to restrict the time their
children spend on sedentary activities and encourage them to take regular exercise. Physical activity and
exercise would help them control their weight by burning excess calories that otherwise would be
stored fat.
In conclusion, there are various factors leading to the increase in childhood obesity and measures should
be implemented to tackle this issue.

It is believed that the most effective solution to combat environmental issues is to raise fuel prices.
While I accept that this measure could have some effects in the short run, I believe that raising people’s
environmental awareness is by far the best approach to deal with these problems.
On the one hand, I think that increasing fuel costs such as petrol, oil and natural gas help address some
of the world’s environmental problems nowadays. Industries especially power plants might find
alternative energy sources such as nuclear or renewables to replace fossil fuels. This would lead to less
greenhouse gasses and emissions released into the atmosphere, mitigating global warming and air
pollution. Another point that needs to be mentioned is that rising fuel prices mean that commuting
costs would rapidly climb. People might take public transport, carpool or cycle to work rather than use
their private vehicles. This could also help reduce the amount of exhaust fumes produced into the
environment.
On the other hand, I personally believe that this is not the best solution to various environmental issues
facing the world today. This is because in recent years, the cost of fuel has grown enormously, but the
number of private cars has still increased at alarming rates. Therefore, I think that in order to properly
solve environmental problems, we need to increase public awareness about the importance of
protecting the earth. When everyone is fully aware of this, they would be willing to take actions to
tackle environmental pollution and other related issues.
In conclusion, although increasing fuel costs could somewhat contribute to environmental protection, it
seems to me that improving people’s environmental protection consciousness is by far the most
practical solution.

Working longer is getting more common in today’s society. I personally believe that this trend not only
has a severe impact on the people/ individuals but also the community as a whole. Therefore, I totally
agree with the idea of limiting working hours.
A few decades ago, a person normally worked an average of eight hours per day. Average daily working
hours in recent years, however, have significantly increased to ten or even fourteen. This, in my opinion,
adversely affects employee’s health and productivity. For example, people who spend longer at work
are more likely to suffer from various health issues, ranging from fatigue to more serious problems like
anxiety disorders or even stroke. Failing health leads to more sick leave, poor work performance and low
productivity. My cousin is a case in point. Working nearly twelve hours on a daily basis, he frequently
feels exhausted and makes more errors at work than he used to.
I also think that working longer hours has serious consequences for families and communities. At the
family level, busy working schedules prevent people from taking frequent family trips or even just
having meals together. Relationships among members are greatly weakened if they cannot make time
for each other. In terms of community life, overworked people do not devote time to voluntary activity
that brings benefits for their society. My uncle, for example, hardly has time for local community service
projects such as conservation work or working with a charity because he works more than sixty hours
per week.
In conclusion, I would argue that working time should be reduced since the frequency of long working
hours exerts an adverse effect on employees, their family bonds and their community.
I personally believe that this trend not only has a severe impact on the people/ individuals but also the
community as a whole. Therefore, I totally agree with the idea of smt : Cá nhân tôi cho rằng/ tin rằng xu

People think that children nowadays have more freedom. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Freedom is an abstract concept that cannot be adequately measured on any physical scales. However,
many people incline to the view that children these days enjoy a more liberal life than previous
generations. My opinion is utterly opposed on this issue for the following reasons.
One of the arguments put forth in support of the former statement is that the digital age presents an
unparalleled opportunity for kids to gain access to a tremendous amount of information without
geographical barriers. Ironically, the advent of the Internet is more of a mixed blessing. Indeed, the
obvious merits of the world wide web cannot overshadow a worrying tendency of that growing
addiction to electrical gadgets such as laptops, tablets or smartphones. Therefore, early exposure to the
virtual world ended up erecting invisible boundaries, inducing kids’ estrangement from actual human
interactions.
On the other hand, amidst a modern-day hectic world, there is an inordinate amount of pressure on
young people to become successful artists, entrepreneurs or startup CEOs before the age of 30.
Consequently, parents would compel their offspring to enroll in highest-paying college majors, oblivious
to their utmost passion. In addition, adult supervision seems to be extending into every aspect of
children’s lives. Take the recent arrest and jailing in the US of a mother for abandoning her nine- year-
old daughter to play alone in the park while she worked. In the current climate of obsession with
children’s safety, parents who let their youngsters out of sight court the accusation of irresponsibility, if
not gross negligence. However, this school of thought may accidentally cause the erosion of children’s
freedom to engage with the world at will.
In conclusion, while the proliferation of the electronic devices could hamper children’s direct contact
with the real world, parents may unintentionally impede a child from acquiring their innate dreams and
fundamental life skills for being overprotective. Thus, I believe millennials feel confined rather than free
during a high tech era.

Describe a programme that you enjoyed very much (e.g. on TV or the internet)
Actually, we are living in the modern time with the explosion of mass media and the various types of
game shows or television programs. In my short talk today, I’m going to tell you about a funny program
that is usually shown on Saturday night. It attracts many audiences including both young and old
generation. I always consider it as a relaxable moment after a hard week. All my family’s members
regularly enjoy it together. We sometimes comment on some messages which are sent in the games
because each different program will have a meaningful story to be sent to audiences as a serious
warning or a good lesson to educate the young humans. Especially, it makes everybody laugh and feel
refreshed to recover their mind. I am really keen on watching that program because I expect to receive
some meaningful information that all humorous actors and actresses convey to me. Sometimes it makes
me laugh many days later.
Part 3
I reckon that most people watch the box for recreational and educational purposes. In terms of
entertainment, as people now lead a hectic life and always feel stressed out, watching these TV shows is
an effective way for them to put their feet up after work. About education, people can acquire
knowledge about various topics like science, wildlife, and history when watching TV. For example, the
game show “Who wants to be a millionaire?” provides the audience with many useful pieces of
information.
lead a hectic life /ˈhek.tɪk/(verb phr.): có cuộc sống hối hả, bận rộn
stressed out /strest/(adj): căng thẳng
acquire knowledge about something /əˈkwaɪər/(verb phr.): tiếp thu kiến thức về lĩnh vực gì
There are a wide variety of types of TV shows, but I think the most popular genres are sitcoms and world
news. As sitcoms do not only provide the audience with witty scenes that make them split their sides but
it sometimes keeps the audience in suspense, most people are keen on this kind. Besides, world news is
another widely-watched form of TV because it helps people to keep up with the latest events around
the world.

Animal videos offer close-up views of nature, and especially of animals. Meanwhile, A zoo cannot
accurately duplicate the natural habitat of the animals within the enclosures. There are far less diverse
plant and animal interactions which pale in comparison to the freedom and space the animals have in
the wild.
Các video động vật cung cấp góc nhìn cận cảnh về thiên nhiên và đặc biệt là động vật. Trong khi đó, một
vườn thú không thể sao chép chính xác môi trường sống tự nhiên của các loài động vật trong khu vực
bao quanh. Có những tương tác giữa thực vật và động vật kém đa dạng hơn rất nhiều so với sự tự do và
không gian mà động vật có trong tự nhiên.
An increasing number of people are choosing cosmetic surgery for changing their appearance. What can
be the reasons for this? Do you think it’s a positive or negative development?
Technology is undeniably convenient. It indeed makes a revolution in any field available, which also
includes cosmetics. There are myriad reasons behind the rise in the number of cosmetic surgeries. It also
depends on many different purposes to be able to categorize reasons. For those who have just
experienced unnecessary accidents, plastic surgery is reasonable. Those with inherent appearance want
to go for plastic surgery to be more confident, more captivating, and more in line with the beauty
standards of each era.
From my perspective, although it is admitted to be useful for those in need, it is still a potential hazard
that needs to be overcome. To begin with, there are several causes provoking people to have cosmetic
surgery. First of all, there are people choosing to make body enhancements with the help of plastic or
cosmetic surgeons because they are deemed necessary. Namely, those who undergo undesirable
incidents such as acid attacks, car accidents, and severe burns that harshly affect their physical
appearance make them look unappealing, terrifying, and easily alienated. These kinds of people are left
with no choice but to undertake the surgery. They need that help to have a more pleasing appearance
and rebuild their self-esteem. Secondly, the present world has become very materialistic. People tend to
pursue formations younger than their actual age. At the same time, celebrities for the sake of looking
attractive experience surgeries to modify their facial components. As a result, their followers tend to
walk in their footsteps leading to a rise in the number of cosmetic surgeries. Lastly, people choosing this
kind of beauty operation are those who suffer from discrimination and body-shaming. Researchers have
ascertained that 90% of married women in Vietnam seek this type of enhancing appearance as a result
of their husbands’ apathy.
Correspondingly, there are numerous pitfalls of undergoing cosmetic surgeries. As a rule, such decisions
can lead to extreme regrets if the surgery fails or there are postoperative complications. A lot of
evidence has been delivered, and many people have admitted that their skin becomes more swollen, red
or sensitive after plastic surgery. More importantly, some symptoms get worse which can lead to skin
cancer or more destructive, death. A recent survey reported a greater number of skin cancers in those
people who had plastic surgeries than those who did not. Furthermore, people lose their natural
appearance and wear artificial masks of beauty. Simultaneously, millions of dollars are spent for
regularly undergoing treatment for proper maintenance of skin. This is also considered a burden on
pockets of the common masses.
To conclude, I will state that plastic surgery has been proven to convey a lot of negativity to the masses.
It glorifies people by demonstrating how important looks are in life causing men and women alike to
flock in search of the so-called “perfect beauty”. Meanwhile, humans ought to understand that we
should be familiar with different types of beauty rather than learning by some standard that is supposed
to be correct without proof. Plastic surgery should be restricted to those who really need it or have
certain casualties.
