Joining the dots…

►Mission – What we do - our purpose

►Vision – What this will look like in 3-5 years time – must be compelling and
realistic ‘Show me the video’ ‘ walk me around the business 3-5 years in the
future’

►Strategy – How me make that (3-5) year vision a reality by engaging the
entire organisation in making it happen by..

• Developing new business, new skills, new systems, new technologies

• Solving ongoing issues/problems that weigh us down and steal our capacity
• Developing the real & visible culture and behaviours necessary to make this
happen

Big Learning #1

All leaders of the business must

become wonderful, courageous
STORY TELLERS, taking the key
messages to every part of the
Global business…..setting the
business context, explaining WHY
choices have been made and
seeking opportunities to check
alignment

Three Fundamentals Truths on the Journey
to Sustainable Enterprise Excellence

1. It is the senior leaders who give direction and influence

by their acts or omissions to organizational culture and
behaviors.

2. The direction provided by the senior leadership team is

powered (for good or bad) by the management and
supervisory group.

3. The real impact of an engaged team culture is only

valuable when it manifests itself consistently within the
value adding teams. This is where business
performance is won or lost.

purpose and why!

We Exist for our Patients!

BUT, ongoing documentation errors, over complexity and poor

training caused delay, loss & risk and massive frustration
within the frontline and middle management groups.

The Story & Purpose must be real
and lived!

►The members of our tribe are

smart!

►The Story and Purpose must be

real and experienced every day in
the way my work works.

► The Story and Purpose must

match what I experience and what I
see my leaders do every day, (all of
them!).

Big Learning #2

Its all about gaining COMMITMENT, it

takes longer than mere compliance but
the return on the time invested is VAST.

The differences between commitment and compliance can often be subtle, but the
outcomes never are.

True commitment creates a passion and energy unattainable through mere compliance.

Gaining commitment means understanding and contributing to the story!

Health Care example.

► We understand the care aspects of the life

journey of individuals and their families in our
community.
► We are listening for and signposting pathways to
health and healthcare
► We can intervein early to minimise health and
health care impacts
► We actively promote and support health in our
community
► Our hospital is a focus of learning and research
in our areas of expertise
► Our hospital is a great place to work and people
have pride in what the organisation is striving
for.

Patient Life Journey – Developing our
Purpose

Our Community - Healthy safe living

What we do to manage and improve health and well being in our

community can delay the ‘life point’ at which our patients need hospital
care.

So what are the things that are important to the
teams that add value?

► An organisation in which I am respected as an individual

and helps me to learn and develop myself

► The Purpose statement relates to me, my team, my site or

business unit

► Truly socially responsible and active, where I can see

impacts in my community

► I can see the organization living its purpose in the way work
works!

► An organisation that genuinely seeks and listens to my

opinions

► An organization where the expressed behaviors at all levels

are inline with its stated purpose.

Big Learning #3

Purposeful ‘Systems Architecture’ to support who we are, what we do and the

culture we need.

Its much, much more than just an

strategy document, this is only 10% of
the shared vision story an purpose.

90% is the story we feel.

The leadership, the follow through, the
energy, the learning.
The SPIRIT of the tribe making it
happen and celebrating their progress.
