Past continuous )
1. Cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
1.1 Thể khẳng định
Cấu trúc: S + was/were + V-ing

Trong đó: S (subject): Chủ ngữ

V-ing: động từ thêm “-ing”

Lưu ý: S = I/ He/ She/ It + was

S = We/ You/ They + were

Ví dụ: – At three o’clock, I was hanging out with my friends. (Vào lúc 3 giờ, tôi đang đi chơi
với bạn của tôi.)

 In 1994 they were working in a small town in Germany. (Vào năm 1994 họ đang làm
việc tại một thị trấn nhỏ ở Đức.

1.1 Thể phủ định

Cấu trúc: S + wasn’t/ weren’t + V-ing

Lưu ý: was not = wasn’t

were not = weren’t

Ví dụ: – I wasn’t paying attention while I was writing the letter, so I made several mistakes.
(Tôi đã không chú ý khi viết lá thư nên đã mắc một vài lỗi.)

 They weren’t working, and we weren’t working either. (Họ đã không làm việc và
chúng tôi cũng không làm việc.)

1.2 Thể nghi vấn

 Câu hỏi Yes/No question
 Cấu trúc: Was/ Were + S + V-ing ?

Trả lời: Yes, S + was/ were.

/ No, S + wasn’t/ weren’t.

Ví dụ: – Were you thinking about him last night? (Đêm qua cậu có nghĩ về anh ấy không?)

Yes, I was./ No, I wasn’t.

 Were they listening while he was talking? (Họ có nghe khi anh ấy nói không?)

Yes, they were./ No, they weren’t.

 Câu hỏi WH- question

Cấu trúc: WH-word + was/ were + S + V-ing?

Trả lời: S + was/ were + V-ing +…

Ví dụ: What was she talking about? (Cô ấy đã nói về cái gì?)

What were you doing in the meeting yesterday? (Bạn đã làm gì trong buổi họp hôm qua?)

Diễn tả những hành động xảy
ra đồng thời trong quá khứ.
 John was listening to music while his mother was cooking in the kitchen.
(John đang nghe nhạc khi mẹ anh ấy nấu ăn trong bếp.)
 Our team were eating dinner, discussing plans, and having a good time. (
Đội của chúng tôi đã đang ăn tối, thảo luận kế hoạch và có một khoảng
thời gian vui vẻ.)

Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra  He was walking in the park when it rained. (Anh ấy đang đi bộ trong công
thì có hành động khác xen vào. viên khi trời mưa.)
  They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened. (Họ đang chờ
xe buýt khi tai nạn xảy ra.)

 When Lisa stayed with me, she was always singing. (Khi Lisa ở với tôi,
Diễn tả một hành động từng cô ấy lúc nào cũng hát.)
lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ và  My friends were always complaining about their wives. (Các bạn của tôi
làm phiền đến người khác. lúc nào cũng phàn nàn về vợ của họ.)

3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết

Trạng từ quá khứ tiếp diễn thường gặp là:

At + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at 5 o’clock yesterday,…)

At this time + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at this time last year,…)

In + năm (in 2001, in 1992)

In the past

Ví dụ của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn:

In 1998, he was staying with his parents. (Vào năm 1998, anh ấy đang ở với bố mẹ.)

At this time last week, we were playing soccer on the beach. (Vào lúc này tuần trước,
chúng tôi đang chơi bóng đá ở bãi biển.)
