Description and Operation – Flexible Coupling GEK 95157

This instruction outlines the Rexnord Omega coupling assembly onto the IMO pump and generator rotor
adapter plate.

I. TAPER-LOCK HUB BUSHING ASSEMBLY

A. General

For Taper-lock hub bushing assembly part identification see Figures 1A and 1B.
Before assembly of the taper-lock hubs and bushings, the IMO pump should be placed on its support
and positioned with the distance between pump and adapter plate shafts 1.00″ to 1.01″ (Figures 2 and
3). Do not tighten pump bolts at this time.
Inspect both the adapter plate driving and IMO pump driven shafts and hub and bushing bores, making
sure they are free from dirt and burrs. Be sure the keys fit the shafts properly.

B. Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Assembly onto Adapter Plate

Insert bushing into hub, matching the holes and not the threads (Figure 1B).
Mount the taper-lock hub bushing assembly onto the adapter plate shaft. Access to the threaded
holes should be facing away from adapter plate and toward the pump for easy access. “Lightly” oil
taper-lock bushing screws and thread into the holes that are threaded in the hub only. Do not tighten
the screws at this time.
Position taper-lock hub bushing assembly approximately 0.25″ from end of adapter plate shaft. Make
sure all the pieces are aligned (Figure 3).
Place key in shaft keyway.
Tighten taper-lock bushing screws to 55 in.–lbs.
Tap face of bushing using drift or sleeve. (Do not hit bushing directly with hammer.)
Re-torque taper-lock bushing screws to 55 in.–lbs.

NOTE

As the screws are tightened, the bushing is wedged inward evenly, gripping the
shaft.

C. Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Assembly onto IMO Pump

Insert bushing into hub, matching the holes and not the threads (Figure 1B).
Mount the taper-lock hub bushing assembly onto the pump shaft (Figures 3 and 4). Access to the
threaded holes should be facing away from the pump and toward the adapter plate for easy access.
“Lightly” oil taper-lock bushing screws and thread into the holes that are threaded in the hub only.
Do not tighten taper-lock bushing screws at this time to allow for proper axial alignment.

II. TAPER-LOCK HUB BUSHING ASSEMBLY ALIGNMENT

A. Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Assembly Axial Alignment

Mount one elastomer element half to set hub spacing (Figure 5). Do not tighten capscrews.

3
GEK 95157 Description and Operation – Flexible Coupling

Scribe line on pump shaft where outside of hub (toward pump) is located.
Remove elastomer element half from hubs.
Scribe second line 0.07″ ± 0.005″ from first line towards pump (Figure 3).
Position outside of hub with second line. Make sure all the taper-lock hub bushing assembly pieces
are aligned.

NOTE

The spacing of the hub bushing assembly 0.07″ beyond first scribed line will allow
a prestretch of flexible coupling. This prestretch allows a minimum axial load on the
IMO pump bearing during operation. The axial load is caused by axial growth and
movement of generator rotor shaft.

Place key in shaft keyway.

Recheck axial position.
Tighten taper-lock bushing screws to 55 in.–lbs.
Tap face of bushing using drift or sleeve. (Do not hit bushing directly with hammer.)
Re-torque taper-lock bushing screws to 55 in.–lbs.

B. Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Assembly Angular and Parallel Alignment

Rigidly attach dial indicator to pump shaft hub, as shown in Figure 6A. Rotate pump shaft 360° to locate
point of minimum reading on the dial and set indicator to read zero at this point.
Rotate pump shaft 360° while watching indicator for misalignment reading.
Shim pump support feet or move pump to bring reading within 1.5 mils TIR.

This provides the proper angular alignment of taper-lock hubs.

Rigidly attach dial indicator to pump shaft hub, as shown in Figure 6B. Rotate pump shaft 360° to locate
point of minimum reading on the dial and set indicator to read zero at this point.
Rotate pump shaft 360° while watching indicator for misalignment reading.
Shim all pump support feet so the centerline of the pump shaft is 4.0 to 8.0 mils radially higher than the
adapter plate shaft centerline. (This takes into account that the generator rotor/adapter plate grows radial-
ly more than the pump during operation.) The side clearance between the pump shaft and adapter plate
shaft should be 1 mil or less.

This provides the proper parallel alignment of taper-lock hubs.

Recheck axial spacing between pump and adapter plate shafts (see Section I.A) and repeat steps in B
above until both angular and parallel alignment limits are met simultaneously.
Tighten pump support bolts per drawing.

III. ELASTOMER ELEMENT ASSEMBLY

Place elastomer elements on hubs by first compressing elements using a C-clamp.

Tighten all capscrews to 204 in.–lbs. (Figure 7). Do not lubricate capscrew threads.

NOTE

Capscrews have self-locking patches which should not be reused more than twice.
Capscrews can be further used with an application of an approved thread-locking
adhesive.

CAUTIONS

Failure to secure capscrews properly could cause coupling component(s) to be-

come dislodged during operation; resulting in personal injury. Remember
capscrews should only be used twice unless an approved thread–locking adhe-
sive is applied.
Do not start generator starting system without the complete coupling being
properly secured to the adapter plate and pump shafts.
If practical, recheck and tighten capscrews after several hours of operation.
It is recommended to inspect the complete coupling assembly every six
months. Look for urethane fatigue tears and environmental deterioration
(checking or cracking) of the polyurethane orange elements and looseness of
capscrews.

IV. REXNORD OMEGA COUPLING DISASSEMBLY

A. General

Removal of Rexnord Omega Coupling does not require moving pump or pump support. The elastomer
element consists of two halves split longitudinally which can be removed radially. The hubs and bush-
ings can be removed by being moved axially to a position between the adapter plate and pump shafts
(Figure 3). The hubs and bushings then can be removed radially.
Replacing elastomer element does not require removing taper-lock hubs and bushings. If coupling has
been in operation a considerable time or if misalignment is suspected, then hubs should be realigned as
described in Section II, Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Assembly Alignment.

B. Elastomer Element Removal

Unscrew capscrews from elastomer elements (Figure 7).

Capscrews have self-locking patches which should not be reused more than twice.
If there is uncertainty about how many times capscrews were used, do not reuse
them as is. Order new capscrews with self-locking patches or apply an approved
thread-locking adhesive.

Radially remove the elastomer element halves (Figure 5).

C. Taper-Lock Hub Bushing Removal

Remove the taper-lock bushing screws completely.

Insert one screw into hole which is threaded in the bushing only (Figure 1B), using it as a jackscrew hole.
This disengages the bushing from the hub and unlocks the coupling from the shaft, allowing easy removal.
Remove the hub bushing assembly by moving it axially to a position between the adapter plate and pump
shafts (Figure 3) and then remove them radially.
