❖ helps predict the behavior of nature and
phenomena in the world
❖ helps organize patterns and regularities as well
as irregularities in the world
❖ provides tools for calculations
❖ has numerous applications in the world making
it indispensable

Indeed, mathematics is an indispensable tool in understanding certain phenomena like the
COVID-19 pandemic. It is used to create mathematical models which help predict how the
virus spreads and how it can be minimized.

Galileo Galilei said that Mathematics is the
language with which God has written the
universe.
He is an Italian astronomer, physicist and
engineer, sometimes described as a
polymath, from Pisa. Galileo has been
called the "father of observational
astronomy", the "father of modern physics",
the "father of the scientific method", and
the "father of modern science“.

The FIBONACCI SEQUENCE is regarded as the NATURE’S CODE.
This is an infinite sequence of natural numbers where
the first value is 0, the next is 1 and, from there, each
amount is obtained by adding the previous two.

The Fibonacci Sequence and Nature
If a banana is sliced along its cross-section, 3
sections will be observed, while an apple has 5
sections.
Regardless of the kind of flowers, it has 3, 5, 8, or
13 petals. These are Fibonacci numbers
The Fibonacci Spiral or Golden Spiral
If squares are constructed using the Fibonacci
numbers, it will be noticed that they fit end to end to
each other as a spiral curve.
The Golden Spiral & The Nautilus Spiral
The Fibonacci spiral
Rows of seeds in sunflower, nautilus shells, galaxies, and
hurricanes are some of the natural representation of
Fibonacci spirals.
The Fibonacci sequence and nature
Golden Ratio
The golden ratio (symbol is the Greek
letter "phi“ φ)
is a special number approximately equal
to 1.618

It appears many times in geometry, art,

architecture and other areas.

Golden ratio is the best proportion for aesthetics. Architecture designs follow the
golden ratio. Even ancient temples and Pyramids of Egypt were built following
the golden ratio.

Math teachers believe that people of all ages love to play games
that are fun and motivating. Games give students opportunities
to explore and use certain algorithm in winning – the same
thing they do in dealing with mathematical expressions.

Playing games provide opportunities for students to deepen

their mathematical understanding and reasoning.
WHAT IS MATHEMATICS?

When games are repeatedly played, it supports student's

development of computational fluency.

The Tower of Hanoi is a familiar 1) Only one disk can be moved at a
math game that even appears in film time.
as an intelligence test of some 2) Each move consists of taking the
creatures. It was created by Lucas upper disk from one of the stacks and
in 1883. It has three rods and n placing it on top of another stack i.e.
disks. The objective of the puzzle is a disk can only be moved if it is the
to move the entire stack to another uppermost disk on a stack.
rod by following the simple rules: 3) No disk may be placed on top of a
smaller disk.

Activities to be submitted
There are 2 activities for you to do. Both outputs should be
submitted to MS Team and must be MS Word files.
Week 1 Activity 1
After reading the notes, listening to the discussion,
and watching the video, you might have already
some realizations regarding Mathematics. In not
more than 5 sentences, give your honest opinion
on the importance of mathematics.
Week 1 Activity 2
Look for things that are important to you or activities that
you usually do. Think of the mathematical concepts that
you can associate with the object or the activity. Take a
PICTURE of you holding the object or a picture of you while
you are doing the activity. DESCRIBE THE MATHEMATICS
INVOLVED in the activity or object. The description must
have 5-7 sentences.
The output will be graded as follows:
picture quality (10)
accuracy of mathematics associated with the object/activity (10)
quality of the explanation(10)
WEEK 1 ACTIVITY 2 sample

For example, you usually drink coffee when you study.

You will have a selfie photo showing yourself while
drinking coffee from a mug and the notes you are
studying. Below the picture, you write the description
of the mathematics involved.
SAMPLE OUTPUT TO BE SUBMITTED

I usually drink coffee from a mug when I study my lessons. The mug is cylindrical
in shape. Its radius is 3.8 cm and height is 8.5 cm. To compute for its volume, I
will use the formula 𝑉 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ. If full, it can hold 385.599 cubic cm or ml when I
computed for its volume. However, I usually just fill it up to three-fourths of its
volume. So, I usually drink just 289 ml of coffee when I study.
