Activity Title: Factoring Polynomials with Common Monomial Factor
Learning Target: To factor polynomials whose terms, have a common monomial factor

In these series of learning activities, we shall practice factoring. This will be very useful when
we must simplify algebraic expressions that we meet in higher mathematics, physics, and
chemistry.
For an algebraic expression such as a monomial, binomial, or polynomial, factoring means
finding the factors of that algebraic expression.
COMMON MONOMIAL FACTOR
To factor polynomial with common monomial factor, expressed the given polynomial as a
product of the common monomial factor and the quotient obtained when the given
polynomial is divided by the common monomial factor 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐𝑥 = 𝑥 (𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐)

To find the factors of a polynomial with a common monomial factor:

Step 1: Find the common monomial factor.
Step 2: Divide each term of the polynomial by the common monomial factor. The
quotient is the other factor of the polynomial.
Example : Factor the algebraic expression, 3 bx +9 by +12 bz
Step 1: The common monomial factor of (3 bx +9 by +12 bz) is (3 b).
3 bx 9 by 12 bz (3 b)x ( 3 b)3 y ( 3 b ) 4 z
Step 2: + + = + + =x +3 y + 4 z
3 b 3b 3b 3b 3b 3b
Therefore, the factors of (3 bx +9 by +12 bz) are (3 b) and ( x +3 y+ 4 z )
Checking: Let us check by multiplying the factors using distributive property.
( 3 b )( x +3 y+ 4 z )= (3 b ) ( x ) + ( 3 b )( 3 y ) +(3 b)(4 z )

¿ 3 bx +9 by +12 bz 
Exercises: Find the factors of the polynomial and check your answer using distributive
property of multiplication.
1. 3 ab+ 6 ac
2. 5 bx +20 by +15 bz
3. ab+ ac−ad −ae
3 2 2
4. 4 x −8 x y +16 xy−12 x y
