EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANC OF GRADE

11 STUDENTS IN CAWAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL S.Y 2023-2024

Chapter I

Rationale

Alcohol use and bingeing among our nation's youth is a major public problems.

Nowadays, senior high school students are consuming Alcohol at increasing rates

whereas the senior high school students who appear to be particularly high risk is one

of the public health concern in terms of their Alcohol consumption and its associated

risk behaviors. Studies from different parts of the world have shown that senior high

school students have a high prevalence of Alcohol drinking and Alcohol-use disorders,

than SHS youth. This could be attributed to the well-established developmental phase

senior high school students go through, in which they are away from home, family, and

longstanding friendships, in addition to the SHS setting, is a unique environment to with

a large proportion of young people being exposed. Aside fah risks, senior ligh school

students who drink too much Alcohol may also be dame the as-damic performance.

There are already many lifestyles and other variables which may be led to academic

performance. Alcohol use is only part of the picture. Interestingly, esmates of booss

spent in the private study were only marginally correlated with academic performance.

Alcohol consumption is used and enjoyed in most developed and developing

countries around the world. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant even

though it is commonly mistaken to be a stimulant (Hutcher, Mineks & Hooley, 20113)

Alcohol is a generic term for ethanol which is found in drinks intended for human
cammption. Other forms of alcohol. including methanol, which is more toxic to humans

than ethanol and therefore nut saitable for human consumption (National Health and

Medical Research Council, 2009). It is produced when citam food stuffs such as barley,

grapes and hops are fermented by combining yeast and sug (Barlow & Durand, 2009)

Ansari et al., (2012) examined the association between alcohol consumption and

academic achievement among university students. The author employed five alcohol

consumption measures (length of time and amount consumed during most recent

drinking occasion, frequency of alcohol consumption, heavy episodic drinking, problem

drinking); and an educational achievement indicator i.e. students' actual module mark in

their study. They concluded that actual module mark was not associated with any

alcohol consumption measure.Ana I. Balsa, Laura M. Giuliano and Michael T. French

(2011) examined the effects of alcohol use on academic achievement in high school

students' quality of learning. Their study concluded that increase in alcohol consumption

results in small yet statistically significant reductions in Grade Point Average (GPA) for

male students and statistically insignificant changes for female students.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Alcohol dependence, the

most cause of severe disorders, is characterized by behavioral and other responses

that always include a compulsion to take Alcohol on a continuous or periodic basis to

experience its psychic effect, and sometimes avoid the discomfort of its absence.

Alcohol dependence is defined by sexennial criteria, including a carrowing of the

persons drinking preferences. increased seeking of Alcoholic beverages often to

Alcohol repeated withdrawal symptoms. Subjective compulsion or a strong urge to drink

despite awareness that drinking creates problems in the person's life and return to

establish drinking patterns of the following periods of abstinence (Collier,1995).

In addition to the associated variables to alcoholism, in a study conducted in

Cambodia. 10.0% out of 3,000 teenager students of mean age 17 reported current

alcohol use, 10.8% lifetime drunkenness, and 2.8% problem drinking. Researchers

found out that sociodemographic factors such as older age and being male, mental

health and other variables such as bullying victimization, having attempted suicide, illicit

drug use, and alcohol exposure variables such as peer influence on drinking alcohol,

were significantly positively associated with current alcohol use and drunkenness.

Moreover, older age, being male, bullying victimization, having close friends, suicide

attempt, drug use, father or male guardian drinks alcohol and peer influence were

associated with problem drinking. (Peltzer, 2016)

Alcohol is part of life for most Filipino teenagers as well as for many University

students and High School students, for them it played an important role in the social

world. To an extent, a decision not to engage in this normative could lead to exclusion

form of the boarder youth scene. Most of the people who consume alcohol are

teenagers or in the early gates adolescents stage. The inhabitation of student's

alcoholism is not new to most of the junior and senior high school students in the

Philippines. Alcoholism is a growing concern in the culture of social life of the country.

Alongside with this case are lots of consequences, risks, and violations that occurs

which seriously needs the deep concern of the parents, different health organizations,

law enforcing officers, and the government, etc.Along many issues regarding Senior

High School students alcohol intake, the researchers aim to determine its effect on their
academic performance and to examine the prevalence of alcohol use among Senior

High School students. The researchers sought and strive to investigate this situation for

us to formulate better study.

The effects of teenage drinking can be quite serious. Fortunately, teenage

alcohol use is on the decline. Still, noting a survey result with three out of four high

school students reporting that they have consumed an alcoholic beverage prior to

graduating high school, the problem with alcoholism should be strictly noted. The most

serious effect of teens drinking is that it leads to adult dependence. The National

Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that teens who start drinking before

the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop an alcohol addiction than those who

do not begin drinking before the legal age of 21. (LMAA, 2017)Intriguingly, research on

the predictors of alcohol use and its adverse outcomes among youth is scarce in the

Philippines. Data from the WHO indicates that almost 9% of the Philippines population

who are 15 years of age and older (estimated at 86 million) have an alcohol use

disorder In addition, 25% of males and 8.3% of females (15-85 years above) are heavy

episodic drinkers. (Segarra, 2016)

Teenagers dringking alcohol in the Philippines and it has hith positive and

negative aftermath An in-depth approach that includes efficiens poly strugs can help

and teaugas from drinking alcohol-reltal harms. Alobotic beverages are the most

frequently used by young people in the Philippines. Data from mutiple national survey's

documented teenagers who use alcobol Rates of current and binge drinking among

senior high school students have generally been declining in past decades, but ever
since the pandene began the percentage sit young alcoholic drinkers increased to 16%

(Roberts, 2022)

The Cebu Provincial Board has urged all local government units and the police to

intensify the campaign against minors buying and consuming alcoholic beverages. The

board passed a resolution following report from World Health Organization that 2.5

million people are getting killed every year because of alcohol consumption. The report

also said that 320,000 of those killed because of alcohol are coming from the age

bracket 15 to 29 years old. Alcohol consumption is also identified as the “third leading

risk factor for poor health globally, and harmful use of alcohol was responsible for

almost 4% of all deaths in the world.” PB Member Antonio Miguel Magpale cited Article

2, Section 13 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution which recognizes the vital role of the

youth in nation building.Magpale said it is the duty of the government to promote and

protect the physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being of the youth. He

added it is also prohibited under Section 6 of the Presidential Decree No. 1619 to sell

alcoholic beverages to minors.Magpale said even the use of minors as commercial

models for liquor is prohibited under Section 14 of Republic Act No. 7610 otherwise

known as “An Act Providing for Stronger Deterrence and Special Protection Against

Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination, and for Other Purposes."(Batuto,2016).

A recent wellness study by PhilCare, a health maintenance organization,

revealed that Cebuanos are into smoking and drinking as forms of stress relief

compared to most Filipinos. The 2nd PhilCare Wellness Index, a nationwide study that

had 1,350 respondents which include 300 from the Visayas or 75 individuals from Cebu,
showed that 93% of Cebuanos drink alcoholic beverages, while 61% light a cigarette to

get relief.(Ruffulo,2019).

over drinking alcohol?

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study is to determine the effects of alcohol consumption to the

academic performance of grade -11 students in Cawayan National High school SY 2023

- 2024. It consider the personal information of the students including their age, sex,

monthly income of their respective parents, and alcoholic drinks that most of the

students consumed. It is also to know the factors that influence the students to engage

in alcoholic drinks and to determine if their is a relationship between alcohol

consumption and academic performance.

This study will utilize a semi - structured interview to uncover the answers to our

questions regarding alcohol consumption of the students particularly teenager, the data

will be gathered using random sampling to all participants of grade-11 students. Their

GPA in the first semester will be needed for analyzing and interpreting the data.
