Noun is a word that names something, such as a person, place,


thing, or idea.

Motivation: Board Game with a Twist


Directions: The teacher will instruct the students to pass around a
mango toy while a song is playing. When the song ends, the student
holding the mango toy will come to the front and pick a number
from a box. The student will count the number from start, stopping
at the number he/she chose, and will give a specific name of the
noun in the board game.

(ANALYSIS)
Common Noun
It is general, non-specific term for a person, place, thing, or
idea.

Examples:
1. I won the game.
2. The book on the table is mine.
3. My sister is a doctor.
4. The tree is very tall.

Proper Noun
It is a noun that serves as the name for a specific place,
person, thing, or idea.

Examples:
1. The boy threw the ball to his dog, Wilson.
2. My second-grade teacher was Mrs. Santos.
3. He wrote a story in English.
4. My favorite movie is Harry Potter.
5. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean.

Engagement Activity 1 Identifying Proper and Common Nouns


(ABSTRACTION) Directions: Identify the underlined word in each sentence as a
proper noun or common noun. Write the underlined word then write
if it is proper noun or common noun.

Example: We went to Rizal Park for our fieldtrip.


Answer: Rizal Park – proper noun

1. Paris is a beautiful city.


2. I love to visit countries with rich history.
3. My favorite newspaper is the Washington post.
4. Jack and Jill went up to the hill to fetch a pail of water.
5. Her husband is called Frank.
6. The Mississippi River is the second longest river in the world.

Activity 2 Sort it out!


Directions: The class will be divided into two groups. They will
select ten people to play for their group. Each person will pick a
word from a box and determine if it is a proper or common noun.
They will high five the next person to play once they have pasted it
into the correct column. The game will last 1 minute. A prize will
be awarded to the group with the most correct answers.

Common nouns name any person, place, thing, or idea. They are
not capitalized unless they come at the beginning of a sentence.

Proper nouns are the names of specific people, places, things, or


ideas. Proper nouns should always be capitalized.
