ABSTRACT

The purpose of this report it to provide the details of the institution of attachment, a description

of all the activities undertaken during the same lessons learnt and challenges during the

attachment period. The essence is to put all the critical work done in class by a student into

practical exercise.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Statement of the background

The industrial attachment is an essential activity of the curriculum of Mount Kenya University.

Upon completion of the second semester in third year, the student must go on an attachment

which is 12 weeks. During this field attachment, one gets exposed to what they have learnt

during their time in school to challenges, learning how to deal with them and also how to

navigate them. Therefore one gets prepared on their future job market. The student’s workplace

to perform during the attachment period with the help of the supervisor to get to know what one

has learnt so far and what contributed to the organization.

1.2 Company profile

Vivo Energy Company Limited was formed with determination to reinvent marketing patterns

with integrity, professionalism and transparency. It also concentrates in achieving customers’

needs by changing market needs and evolving oil cycles. Embracing students is one of their good

qualities in order to teach them the real world work as opposed to learning in school.

The vision for Vivo Energy is to become the most respected energy business in Africa.

Vivo Energy is focused in providing stability and security through professional services and

respecting social values in the field of oil.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

2.1 Introduction

The industrial attachment training is an essential component of the curriculum of MKU and

therefore no graduation without the industrial attachment. The attachment period is usually 12

weeks, during which the students expected to acquire additional practical experience to

supplement the course of study in the university. They are also exposed to the real world of work

and its challenges which will prepare them towards their future careers.

2.2 Objectives of the attachment

i. To assess the interest of the students and occupation he or she plans to be undertaken

ii. To expose the students to work methods not taught in the university and provide asses to

products equipment not normally available in the environment of the university

iii. To provide the students with the opportunity to apply knowledge in real work situation

thereby closing the gap between university work and actual practice

iv. To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly and to enhance student

contacts for job placement

v. To enlist and strengthen employers’ investment in institutional activities and in the entire

educational process of preparing the student employment in industry

vi. To enhance industry’s satisfaction with the graduate of the facility in particular and the

university at large.

2.3 Benefits to students

The industrial attachment seeks to offer students of practical translation of the theory they have

been taught. It has also got individual benefit of leasing the university to the industries hence

brightening the employment chances of the students in the university. Through this attachment, I

have generated a good interpersonal relationship through my interaction with my supervisors and

colleagues. This has assisted me to interact confidently with people irrespective of their position.

2.4 Experience

Through my attachment I have gained some new experience in the setting and running a petrol

station and offering some after sale services like cleaning windscreens ,selling and fitting minor

spares, checking the oil and water levels of a vehicle and preparing bank petrol charge slips..

2.5 Moral education

Working in the university espoused me to various learning environment. It has thereby in

calculated in me sympathy for the poor and above all the will to acquire myself from improving

my practical knowledge.

EVALUATION OF THE ATTACHMENT

3.1 Challenges experienced

i. Financial challenges

ii. Inadequate attachment openings

iii. Lack of access to machines

iv. Inadequate training equipment

3.2 Remedies to the challenges

i. Adequate finance to support activities in the company.

ii. Bringing about a lot of attachment opportunities in order to give the students work

experience.

iii. Introducing new machines to many companies to enable flexibility of work.

iv. Introducing training equipment to many oil companies to enable work efficiency.

3.3 Conclusion

At first the attachment period was not enjoyable since I had to familiarize with both workmates

and the working environment.as time went by it turned out to be fruitful. I gained experience and

skills which is required in the petroleum sector. I could manage oil industry’ surroundings and

inspections. .
