Week 1: Simple Past Tense
Memory Text:
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not
perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19

Enabling Outcomes: (MELC)

Based on the curriculum guide (CG), the student should be able to: Use the past and past perfect
tenses correctlty in varied context. Simple Paste Tense.

Concepts (Generalization)
Past Tense
The Past Tense indicates that an action is in the past relative to the speaker or writer.

When the time period has finished: "We went to Chicago last Christmas."
When the time period is definite: "We visited Mom last week."
With for, when the action is finished: "I worked with the FBI for two months."
Regular verbs use the verb's base form (scream, work) plus the -ed ending (screamed, worked). Irregular verbs
alter their form in some other way (slept, drank, and drove).

The simple past or past tense is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that happened or existed before
now. Imagine someone asks what your brother Wolfgang did while he was in town last weekend.
Wolfgang entered a hula hoop contest. “He won the silver medal.”
Here’s the Formula for the Past Tense:

1. For regular verbs, add -ed to the root form of the verb (or just -d if the root form already ends in an e):

Play→Played Type→Typed Listen→Listened Push→Pushed Love→Loved

2. For irregular verbs, things get more complicated. The simple past tense of some irregular verbs looks

exactly like the root form:

Put→Put Cut→Cut Set→Set Cost→Cost Hit→Hit

3. For other irregular verbs, including the verb to be, the simple past forms are more erratic:

See→Saw Build→Built Go→Went Do→Did Rise→Rose Am/Is/Are→Was/Were

The good news is that verbs in the simple past tense (except for the verb to be) don’t need to agree in number

with their subjects.

Wolfgang polished his medal. The other winners polished their medals too.
Here are some examples of present tense transformed into past tense:

Week 1: Past Perfect Tense
Memory Text:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old had gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

Enabling Outcomes: (MELC)

Based on the curriculum guide (CG), the student should be able to: Use the past and past perfect
tenses correctlty in varied context. Past Perfect Tense.

Concepts (Generalization)
Past Perfect Tense
The past perfect, is a verb tense used to talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past.

We were shocked to discover that someone had graffitied “Tootles was here” on our front door. We were
relieved that Tootles had used washable paint.

The past perfect tense is for talking about something that happened before something else. Imagine waking up

one morning and stepping outside to grab the newspaper. On your way back in, you notice a mysterious

message scrawled across your front door: Tootles was here. When you’re telling this story to your friends later,

how would you describe this moment? You might say something like:

I turned back to the house and saw that some someone named Tootles had defaced my front door!

This is the format in making a past perfect tense:

Subject + had + past participle = past perfect tense.
Example:
Subject = The lady
had
Past participle= eaten
Past Perfect Tense= The lady had eaten.
