Loss of Phase
• As an AC motor may be designed for one, two or
three phase AC circuits, loss of one phase will effect
its operation:
➢ A three phase motor will continue to run but at a
slower speed and with less torque. It can not start if
stopped.
➢ A two phase motor will stop and can not be
started.
➢ A single phase motor will stop and can not be
started.
AC Synchronous Motor
• AC synchronous motor will have a permanent magnet
rotor or DC supplied windings. This ensures a stable
magnetic field around the rotor whether it is turning
or not.
• It rotates at a very accurate and constant speed, the
synchronous speed. Used in the gyroscopic devices

AC Induction Motor(asynchronous)
AC voltage is supplied to the stator windings this
will set up a rotating magnetic field which in turn
will act as a variable magnetic field around the
caged rotor.
This will induce a voltage, and therefore also a
current , in the rotor bars , which as a result of
this current also will build up of a magnetic field.
This will interact with the rotating main field and
try to align itself with it thus creating a torque.
