2
IEC standards
ƒ IEC 60055-2 amendment 2 – MV PILC cables
Appendix C: Ampacity tabulated in several standard situations (3.6/6 kV up to 18/30
kV)

ƒ IEC 60502-2 – MV cables with extruded insulation

Annex B: Ampacity tabulated in several standard situations (3.6/6 kV up to 18/30
kV)

ƒ Ampacity is calculated using IEC 60287 for standard situations

3
Usage
1. Choose correct
standard:
PILC: IEC 60055
XLPE: IEC 60502
2. Look up ampacity
for correct cable in
standard situation

Table C12 of IEC 60055-2

4
Usage
3. Look up correction (derating) factors for different ambient temperature, depth of
laying, soil resistivity, etc…

Table C19 of IEC 60055-2

5
Usage
4. Multiply standard ampacity with all correction factors

Ampacity = 243 x 1.05 = 255 A

Exercises
ƒ Now it’s your turn!

7
Limitations
ƒ Several assumptions regarding:
- Cable construction
- Loading (frequency and balance)
- Temperatures
- Moisture migration (no dried-out soil)
- Depth of laying
- Spacing between cables
- Soil thermal resistivity
- Bonding
- No other heat sources

ƒ Look in the standards for these assumptions !!!

8
Limitations
ƒ Correction factors for a few of these assumptions
ƒ But not all of them !!!
ƒ Problems:
- Moisture migration (dried-out soil)
- Both PILC and XLPE in one group
- Single end or cross-bonding (single-core cables)
- Etc…

9
Limitations
ƒ If assumptions are not met: “back to basics”
- IEC 60287 (steady-state)
- IEC 60853 (cyclic) or dynamic current rating
- Gives higher ampacity than steady-state

Note:
ƒ This idea may be used to create your companies’ own engineering guidelines / tools
- Example 1:
- Cable bed engineeringstool to prevent PILC – XLPE rating problems when in a single bed
- Uses Excel tool, see next slides
- Example 2:
- Use of dynamic rating possibilities integrated in MV cable engineering when using standardised
trenches
- Uses either Excel tool or tables
