Article ; Prediction of non-woven geotextiles’ reduction factors for damage caused by the drop of backfill
materials
Aim:
The aim of study involves:
1. Assessment of Non-Woven Geotextiles' Performance: To evaluate the performance of non-woven
geotextiles when subjected to damage caused by the drop of backfill materials commonly used in
construction and engineering projects.
2. Prediction of Reduction Factors: To develop a predictive model or methodology that estimates
reduction factors for non-woven geotextiles damaged by the impact of backfill materials. This could
involve statistical analyses or experimental assessments to derive these predictive factors.
Objectives:
The objective is to calculate:
1. Quantify Impact Damage: To quantify the degree and nature of damage experienced by non-woven
geotextiles when subjected to impacts from dropped backfill materials, considering factors such as
material properties, impact force, and drop height.
2. Identify Reduction Factors: To identify, analyze, and establish reduction factors specific to non-woven
geotextiles caused by various types and intensities of backfill material drops, aiming to create a
comprehensive understanding of the damage incurred.
3. Characterize Failure Mechanisms: To investigate the failure mechanisms and modes of damage in
non-woven geotextiles resulting from the impact of dropped backfill materials, identifying critical
points of weakness or vulnerability.
Variables:
The variables are:
1. Type of Backfill Material: Different types of backfill materials can have varying densities, sizes, and
shapes, which can impact the damage caused upon impact.
2. Drop Height/Impact Energy: The height from which the backfill materials are dropped, or the impact
energy exerted, is a crucial variable affecting the severity of damage.
3. Geotextile Characteristics: Properties of the non-woven geotextiles, such as tensile strength,
thickness, density, and material composition, can significantly influence their susceptibility to damage.
4. Drop Impact Area: The specific area or region of the geotextile impacted by the dropped backfill
material might affect the extent and nature of damage incurred.
5. Failure Mode: The mode of failure or damage experienced by the geotextile, whether it's tearing,
puncturing, stretching, or other types of damage, can be a variable studied in such research.
6. Reduction Factors: Quantified reduction factors or indices representing the decrease in the
geotextile's performance due to the impact of backfill materials.
Observations/ findings:
The observed charactcerstics :
1. Material Response to Impact:
 Deformation: Observe the extent of deformation in non-woven geotextiles when
subjected to the impact of dropped backfill materials.
2. Structural Integrity: Assess whether the geotextiles maintain their structural integrity or
experience damage due to the impact.
3. Reduction in Strength Properties:
 Tensile Strength: Measure any reduction in tensile strength after the geotextiles are
exposed to the impact of dropped backfill materials.
4. Puncture Resistance: Evaluate changes in puncture resistance as an indicator of potential
damage.
5. Surface Damage and Wear:
Surface Abrasion: Look for signs of surface abrasion or wear on the geotextile material caused by the
impact of backfill materials.
6. Fiber Pullout: Identify instances of fiber pullout or damage to individual fibers within the
geotextile.

The study concluded that:
1. Impact on Geotextile Performance:
 Reduction in Tensile Strength: Conclude whether the drop of backfill materials
results in a significant reduction in the tensile strength of non-woven geotextiles.
2. Puncture Resistance: Determine the impact on puncture resistance and the ability of
geotextiles to withstand sharp objects.
3. Reduction Factors Calculation:
 Accuracy of Reduction Factors: Evaluate the accuracy of the calculated reduction
factors in predicting geotextile performance under specific impact conditions.
4. Methodology Effectiveness: Determine the effectiveness of the chosen methodology
for predicting reduction factors.
