Week 6

LESSON: Festivals
MELC: Identify the most celebrated festivals in the Philippines;
Analyze the uniqueness of each group’s performance of their selected
festival or theatrical form;
Create/ Improvise dance steps that will represent the locals from the
selected festival.

Key Concepts

1. Festivals are mostly celebrated to propagate the cultural heritage of a

city or a nation.
2. Festivals highlight various aspects of society. They help keep traditions
and provide entertainment to the people.
3. Most festivals are religious in origin, but today the religious component
is usually secondary to the general spirit of celebration.

PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL

The Panagbenga Festival is

held at Baguio City, the Summer
Capital of the Philippines. Its
English name is called “The
Blooming Flower Festival” which
means Season of Blooming. The
whole city celebrates at the town
proper with different flower
parades, street dances, and other
fun activities. Floats are also
displayed with different flower
arrangements. The said festival is
an annual festival celebrated
every February to pay tribute to the city’s beautiful grown flowers. As the
Panagbenga Festival evolves, new activities and initiatives were done. Tourists
are delighted with what Baguio has to offer. The Cordilleran’s creativity, unity,
culture, and traditions were highlighted and appreciated. The Panagbenga has
always received huge media coverage because of the continuous popularity it
has enjoyed from the very beginning. Every year, visitors are treated to a
display of the strength of the local community spirit as the residents stage the
hottest show in the coolest city in the Philippines.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL

It is celebrated in Davao City

during August. It is a festival of
thanksgiving for the gifts of nature,
the wealth of culture and good
harvest. The festival is celebrated by
displaying various farming tools,
fruits, vegetables, rice and corn
grains to give tribute to their gods.
The city also showcases different
dances, floats, tribal costumes and jewelries. Aside from typical street dance and
floats, the city also holds boat races, horse fighting and tribal animal shows
similar to bullfighting in Spain.

SINULOG FESTIVAL The SINULOG

FESTIVAL in Cebu City is held every
year on the third Sunday of January.
The festival is characterized by a very
long parade with many groups of
persons dressed in colorful
costumes, finding their way through
the streets while dancing the
Sinulog. To distinguish the festival
from the popular Ati-Atihan Festival
on Panay Island, this festival
is characterized by a different dance.
This Sinulog dance is now the
traditional and ritual dance in honor
of Santo Niño. The dance is accompanied by the sound of the drums: all the
time moving two steps forward followed by one step backward. Though the
dance is already very old, the parade is rather young! 1980 was the first year
that the parade was organized. It also attracts between 1 to 2 million visitors
from all over the country every year and gives travelers the opportunity to
join Cebu tours to explore the province.

MORIONES FESTIVAL

It is a festival held on Holy Week on the island of Marinduque,

Philippines. The "Moriones" are men and women in costumes and masks
replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks. The
participants use morion masks to depict the Roman soldiers and Syrian
mercenaries within the story of the Passion of the Christ. The mask was named
after the 16th and 17th centuries as Morion helmet. Morions roam the streets
in town from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday scaring the kids or engaging in
antics or surprise to draw attention. The various towns also hold the unique
tradition of the pabasa or the recitation of Christ’s passion in verse.
