2. Four stroke

3. A four stroke engine goes through two rotations of the crankshaft per cycle. For purpose of
explanation, the operating cycle of a single piston, upright, 4 stroke, diesel engine starting at
Top dead center will be described. From TDC the piston will begin to travel downwards as the
intake valve is opened. The downward motion of the piston in the cylinder will cause a vacuum
in the cylinder thus allowing for negative displacement of air from the intake valve to fill the
cylinder. Just before the piston reaches bottom dead center, the intake valve will close. At BDC
the crankshaft has rotated 180 degrees and the 1st stroke, the intake stroke has been complete.
The piston will now begin to travel back up towards TDC, volume in the cylinder will decrease as
the piston travels up. Due to the friction caused by the air being compressed by the piston there
will be a increase in heat. Just before TDC fuel will be injected into the combustion chamber.
This compression induced heat will then ignite the air fuel mixture just as the piston reaches
TDC. This has completed the second stroke of the engine, the compression stroke and equates
to a 360 degree rotation of the crankshaft. At this point the ignition of diesel will cause gases to
expand and drive the cylinder downwards. This is the combustion stroke. Once the piston
reaches BDC for the second time the crankshaft will have rotated 540 degrees. The piston will
now begin to travel back upwards and as this happens the exhaust valve will open. As the
piston travels up the cylinder it will push the exhaust gases out through the exhaust port. Just
before TDC the exhaust valve will close. Once the piston reaches TDC this will mark the end of
the exhaust stroke and a rotation of 720 degrees of the crankshaft thus completing one
operating cycle of a 4 stroke diesel engine.

5. Safety precautions:
● One must ensure that proper PPE is worn.
● All fluids and flammable materials shall be removed.
● All electrical power sources shall not hold a charge and circuit shall be disconnected
from power source.
● Components holding kinetic energy (i.e springs)
● A clear workspace is necessary.
