Recurrent floods are the most important factor shaping riparian forests. Each liter of water
flowing into the riparian zone carries particles of nutrients. These particles settle and form fertile
soils, enabling the growth of the riparian forests: the most biologically diverse forests in Europe.
The Odra valley in Poland had been cut off from natural flooding for ages, but this year’s
flood flowing through the newly built earth dams has filled the riparian area in the valley, which
nearly dried up in recent years. These new dams, built further from the Oder River, have allowed
water from the river to reclaim almost 700 hectares of floodplain area. Once again, the forest can
be regularly watered and nourished with river sediments.
It is worthwhile to let the river spread its waters where it doesn’t pose a threat to people. As
the flooded water has nowhere else to spill, the flood safety of residents in the area is greatly
improved. By maintaining and a partially natural state of the river, this has created conditions for
the restoration of valuable riparian habitats, which are of priority importance in the protection of the
nature in Europe.
42. What is the MAIN IDEA of this passage?
1) Protection of riparian forests are increasing in importance with the effects of climate change.
2) New dams have improved the biodiversity of the Odra valley and the safety of residents.
3) Riparian forests have been destroyed throughout much of the Odra valley.
4) Floods have been recurrent phenomenon in Poland, posing threat to residents.
