2. Napoleon named leader of French army, 1796 - Napoleon rapidly rose


through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution.
5. Napoleon crowns himself emperor, December 2, 1804 - After seizing
political power in France in a 1799 coup d'état, he crowned himself emperor
in 1804.
4. The Napoleonic Code, March 21, 1804 - The Napoleonic Code was created
because the legal system in France before 1800 consisted of various laws
derived from Roman, feudal, and royal legal codes. After the French
Revolution, Napoleon wanted to modernize France.
3. The Louisiana Purchase 1803 - In this transaction with France, signed on
April 30, 1803, the United States purchased 828,000 square miles of land
west of the Mississippi River for $15 million. For roughly 4 cents an acre.
6. The Battle of Trafalgar October 21, 1805 - Napoleon wanted to invade and
conquer Britain, which meant he had to sink the British navy first, otherwise
it would be able to prevent his army from landing.
1. Haitian Revolution August 21, 1791 - the only successful slave revolt in
history, and resulted in the establishment of Haiti, the first independent
black state in the New World.
8. Peninsular War 1807 – It started when the French and Spanish armies
invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807 by transiting through Spain, and it
escalated in 1808 after Napoleonic France occupied Spain, which had been its
ally for a while.
7. The Continental System November 21, 1806 - The Continental System was
Napoleon's strategy to weaken Britain's economy by banning trade between
Britain and states occupied by or was allied with France, which proved
largely ineffective and eventually led to Napoleon's fall.
10. Invasion of Russia 1812 - The Russian army refused to engage with
Napoleon's Grande Armée of more than 500,000 European troops. They
simply retreated into the Russian interior.

up and Napoleon offered to step down in favor of his son. When this offer
was rejected, he abdicated and was sent to Elba.
13. Hundred Days March 20, 1815 – This started when Napoleon arrived in
Paris after escaping from exile on Elba.
15. Napoleon exiled to St. Helena October 15, 1815 – Napoleon’s enemies
wanted to incarcerate him in a place from which he could definitely not
escape. They chose St Helena. This island of 47 square miles lies in the South
Atlantic Ocean, some 1,200 miles from the nearest land.
12. Congress of Vienna 1814 - The objective of the Congress was to provide a
long-term peace plan for Europe by settling critical issues arising from the
French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars through negotiation.
