STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR SHOSANYA KAZEEM EKUNDAYO

I write to express my desire to join your great institute of learning, Teesside University, for a
postgraduate program in Mechanical Engineering for January 2022 academic session. I am a
graduate of Mechanical Engineering and completed my Higher National Diploma (HND) with
upper credit in 2010. Since then, I have worked in various engineering firms in different technical
and managerial capacities. Presently I work as a field engineer for an engineering servicing firm
that renders services to companies in the oil and gas sector. Over the years, I have developed
expertise as a field engineer and developed my ability to manage and lead teams to ensure prompt
implementation and execution of tasks while adhering to all safety standards.

The emerging need for more productive capacity in Nigeria and the influx of foreign investors
seeking experts who have the technical ability to manage the production process has fueled my desire
to broaden my knowledge in Mechanical Engineering at Teesside University, one of the best schools
in that area of specialization. My research on the faculty and discussion with current and past students
shows that undertaking the program at your institution will be the best decision I have made so far.
I am particularly excited about courses on CAD/CAM and Product development, Machine design,
Engineering Research Project and Manufacturing System which will help deepen my knowledge on
manufacturing technics and processes. In addition to the knowledge obtained and network built, a
foreign certification from United Kingdom is a mark of excellence that will turn around my career
opportunities especially if obtained from a renowned school like Teesside University.
The school and department are also looking for academically grounded individuals who have the
mental capacity to cope with the rigours of the program and who will also progress in their careers
as proud Alumni. The attached testimonial and recommendation letters from my current employer
show that I am a good fit for the calibre of students you also want in the program.

Right from my childhood days, my curiosity has always pushed me to understand the mechanics of
how things around me work. I will rather dismantle toys and see how it works than play with them.
In my high school days, I participated and exceled in many science exhibitions which motivated me
to develop my innate ability for problem solving and curiosity by pursuing a degree in Mechanical
Engineering. In my first year in higher institution, the subject of workshop technology was offered
which helped me to understand the basics of manufacturing. It involved study and working on
machines like Lathe, Milling, Universal Grinding Machine, and other specific machinery.
As mentioned earlier, studying at Teesside University will provide me with the broader knowledge
required to develop expertise in Mechanical Engineering which is essential to attaining my current
and future professional goals. In addition, the schools Mechanical Engineering is considered one
of the best in the world due to its strong faculty and the diverse career opportunities open to
graduates of the program.
My immediate plan after my postgraduate program is to target a managerial role in a top
multinational oil and gas servicing firm and use the knowledge gained to add value to the firm.
After developing a strong network in the managerial capacity, it is my desire to set up my own
boutique servicing firm where I can really use all the experiences, network and knowledge gained
to drive innovative impacts in the engineering industry thereby contributing to the development of
technical capacity in my home country. In addition, the postgraduate program will not only help
me bridge the discrimination gap HND graduates face in the market, but it will also give me an
edge over other colleagues in the industry and will be a good brand to include in a company’s
management profile while seeking for contracts.
Please consider my submission for an admission as I am sure the school, colleagues and faculty
will also benefit from the wealth of experience I have gathered over the years and the valuable
spotlight I stand to bring to the programme as an Alumni. I look forward to your favourable
