Introduction
Teenage pregnancy is a global health issue that

adversely affects birth outcomes and can lead to
intergenerational cycles of poverty and ill-health.
In all settings, teenage pregnancies are more
likely to occur in communities affected by social
and economic disadvantage. In Australia, as in
many high-income countries, the incidence of
births in women and girls aged under 20 years
has been falling over the past decade, dropping
from 18.4 per 1000 in 2008 to 9.5 per 1000 in
2018. While this overall decline is generally re-
garded as a welcome trend, the pathways lead-
ing to teenage parenthood are diverse, and not
all pregnancies are unintended or unwanted.
While pregnancy in the teenage years can have a
transformative impact on changing unhealthy be-
haviours and relationships for some individuals,
this is not universal.
The social and health implications of teenage

pregnancies include increased exposure to do-
mestic violence (which may be exacerbated by
the pregnancy), mental health disorders, sub-
stance use, sexually transmissible infections
(STIs), financial stress and homelessness. Impor-

tantly, an individual’s education and training can

be disrupted by teenage pregnancy, with vari-
able opportunity for resumption. While teenage
mothers are often motivated to do the best for
their babies and to continue to develop them-
selves as parents and into adult life, they may be
particularly susceptible to breaches of their
rights to healthcare and education. Primary and
secondary care services need to be teenage
friendly to optimise engagement of young women
who choose to continue a pregnancy. Similarly,
schools and training facilities can enhance conti-
nuity of education by supporting return to study,
breastfeeding and affordable childcare.
Teenage pregnancy is a global health problem

that has a negative impact on birth outcomes
and can cause poverty and ill health to pass
down through generations. In all contexts, com-
munities experiencing social and economic de-
privation have a higher likelihood of having ado-
lescent pregnancies. The incidence of births
among women and girls under the age of 20 has
decreased during the past ten years in Australia,
as it has in many other high-income nations, de-
creasing from 18.4 per 1000 in 2008 to 9.5 per

1000 in 2018. Although the overall trend toward

fewer teen pregnancies is typically seen as posi-
tive, not all pregnancies among teenagers are
unwanted or unintentional.

Teenage pregnancy is one of those life occurrences that
few families prepare for, and its ramifications extend far be-
yond the life of the young mother to affect other family mem-
bers. The emotional, financial, and social repercussions of
teenage pregnancy can have a substantial and life-changing
impact on the entire family, regardless of whether the preg-

nancy is terminated, the child is placed for adoption, or the
kid is viewed as an unexpected but welcome addition.
Emotional Effects
Parental reactions to the news of a teen pregnancy in-
clude denial, guilt and anger; emotions often shared by the
pregnant teen. The young father and his family can also ex-
perience similar feelings, according to the American Acad-
emy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Depending on the
family’s religious beliefs and social network, fear of being re-
jected or even ostracized can come into play. Many parents
of a pregnant adolescent perceive the situation as a negative
reflection on their own parenting skills. The pregnant teen
can become depressed, which can also have a negative im-
pact on the family’s overall emotional well-being. On the pos-

itive side, many families reach a point of acceptance, focus-
ing their emotional energies on welcoming the infant and
helping the teenager move forward with her life and educa-
tion after the birth.
Economic Effects
The financial burden of the pregnancy and birth usually
falls on the young woman's family, regardless of whether the
adolescent mother decides to abort the pregnancy, place the
child for adoption, or raise the child. According to Kaiser
Health News, a lot of employee health plans exclude depen-

dents from maternity coverage, forcing families of teenage
moms to foot the bill for pregnancy and delivery costs. Infant
health care costs after the baby is born, along with regular
costs like diapers, clothing, and child care, have a significant
impact on the family budget.
Ripple Effect
Mothers of teenagers frequently pitch in to raise their
grandchildren, which can have a severe impact on their ca-
pacity to nurture their own children. According to Patricia L.
East of the University of California at San Diego's Depart-
ment of Pediatrics, in some cases, having a teen parent in
the family prompts the new grandmother to give her other

children more attention, but in most cases, her expanded
obligations compromise her ability to care for her own chil-
dren. According to East, when the mother-grandmother is a
single parent, this diminished parental emphasis can pave
the way for additional teenage pregnancies.
A teenage pregnancy in the family can create a shift in goals, not

only for the pregnant teenager, but for other family members as
well. A pregnant teenager who had planned to go away to college
after high school might obtain a GED and enroll in online college
courses instead. The new grandparents might postpone continuing
education or midlife career shifts in order to help their daughter
with child-rearing obligations. A teenage pregnancy can have
repercussions on the short-term goals of the entire family, as
planned vacations and outings take a backseat to the more pressing
issues surrounding the birth and care of the baby.
Teenage pregnancy has disastrous effects on society in addition to

having negative effects on an adolescent's physical and mental
health. Teenagers who are unmarried and pregnant may experience
societal prejudice, and they frequently may not receive the help

they need to finish their education, find employment, and reinte-

grate into society.
Social isolation and poverty make them vulnerable to risky behav-

iors, which in turn can affect society by laying a financial burden
on the government that needs to invest in the rehabilitation and
welfare of teenage mothers and their babies.
Effects Of Teenage Pregnancy On Society:
Our society relies on moral beliefs, ethics, and human etiquettes.

And unfortunately, teenage pregnancy is viewed as taboo. Society,
as progressive as it wants to be, cannot embrace the concept of a
pregnant teen mother.
There were nearly 250,000 babies born in 2014

to teen moms, according to the U.S. Department
of Health & Human Services. About 77 percent of
these pregnancies were unplanned. A teenage
pregnancy can change the course of a young
mom’s life. It puts her in a place where she’s re-
sponsible not only for herself, but also for an-
other human being.

clearly known causes and serious health, so-
cial and economic consequences. Globally,
the adolescent birth rate (ABR) has de-
creased, but rates of change have been un-
even across regions. There are also enormous
variations in levels between and within coun-
tries. Adolescent pregnancy tends to be
higher among those with less education or of
low economic status. Further, there is slower
progress in reducing adolescent first births
amongst these and other vulnerable groups,
leading to increasing inequity. Child marriage
and child sexual abuse place girls at in-
creased risk of pregnancy, often unintended.
In many places, barriers to obtaining and us-
ing contraceptives prevent adolescents from
avoiding unintended pregnancies. There is
growing attention being paid to improving ac-
cess to quality maternal care for pregnant
and parenting adolescents. WHO works with
partners to advocate for attention to adoles-
cent pregnancy, to build an evidence base for

action, to develop policy and programme sup-

port tools, to build capacity and to support
countries to address adolescent pregnancy
effectively.
How can teenage pregnancy be prevented?

• Choose you friends carefully. Friends should want what is
best for you, and they should respect your decision not to
have sex. Beware of friends who try and pressure you into
having sex.
• Beware of situations, like a group of friends drinking or tak-

ing drugs that could lead to unsafe sex.
• Beware of partners who claim ‘You must sleep with me to

prove you love me.’
• Listen and learn from those who have gone through teenage
pregnancy. They know the mistakes and disadvantages, and
can help you to avoid making the same mistakes.
• Listen and learn from your parents about their life experi-
ences. If they put restrictions on you, it is not necessarily be-
cause they want to make you suffer. Usually, it is because
they want the best for you, so they do it to help and protect
you.

Conclusion
Teen pregnancy is a pregnancy in female human-

beings who are below the age of twenty years
and being a teen parent it isn’t as great as it
sounds. Teen pregnancy should be highly dis-
couraged has it has effect on the teenage
mother and the baby born. The teen mother may
face complications such as premature labor,
medical complication during the pregnancy pe-
riod, at child birth or after child birth and are
likely to drop out of school.
One cause for an early pregnancy for a teenager

is family problems particularly a broken family. A
teenager who has a broken family would be open
to temptations because no one reminds him/her
what is right thus he/she would involve in pre-
marital sexual activities and would be having a
child at an early age. Another possible reason for
teenage pregnancy is financial problems. Finan-
cial problem would push a teenager to engage in
prostitution which may lead to early pregnancy
for her. Another reason for teenage pregnancy is
having flirty or bad friends. If a teenager has
friend who are considered as flirty or has friends

who are not good then it would lead them into

early pregnancy.
No one wants to become a parent when they are

a teenager. Teenagers are not able to get a de-
cent education, and some teens don’t know what
they want to do with their lives. Teens don’t
want to stay home and take care of a child. Yes,
a baby is really cute and all, but teenagers really
need to think about what they are getting them-
selves into. There are many of things that
teenagers have to give up one is by having a
child at a young age, when they are a child them-
selves. Teens should think about what they are
doing before they accidently become teenage
mother. And it is the responsibility not only of a
parent but of other adults to assist a child so
that she will not be pregnant early. Teachers or
relatives can be the ones to guide the teenager
so that she can withstand her problems and re-
frain from being pregnant at an early age. Teen
pregnancy is a long road. You will most likely
end up walking that road by yourself most of the
way. If you do get pregnant, take responsibility
for your actions.
