NIPPON 8048
Product Description:

NIPPON 8048 is a two-pack epoxy polyamide coating, specifically designed for use on steel surfaces
that cannot be abrasive blast cleaned. It provides a high build impervious barrier coating that gives
excellent adhesion and surface wetting properties on manually prepared, rusty steelwork. Its unique
combination of anti-corrosion pigments and rust penetrants provides excellent corrosion resistance in
virtually any environment. NIPPON 8048 can be used either as a high build primer or a self-priming high
build finish under non-immersion service.

Physical Characteristics of Paint:

Colour : As per colour card (limited colour)
Texture : Semi Gloss
Specific Gravity : 1.20 - 1.40 (for mixture of base and hardener)
Solid Content : 90 ± 2% by volume
(ASTM D2697 1973)

Recommendation For Use:

Surface Preparation:
1. For optimum performance, abrasive blasting in accordance to Sa 2½ ISO 8501-1:1988 is
desirable.
2. Average of surface profile 50 - 100 microns is acceptable.
3. The surface to be coated must be clean and dry. Zinc salts can be removed by fresh water
wash and scrubbing. Dry brushing should be sufficient to remove dirt.
4. Where abrasive blasting is not possible, mechanical cleaning to St 3 ISO 8501-1:1988 standard
is acceptable.
5. For galvanised surfaces, thorough solvent degreasing to SSPC-SP1 is necessary.
Recommended No. Of Coats : 1 - 2 coats
Recommended Film Thickness : 100 ~ 250 microns for dry film
Per Coat 110 ~ 280 microns for wet film

Theoretical coverage at : 9.0 m2/litre (for dry film thickness of 100 microns)
Recommended Film Thickness 3.6 m2/litre (for dry film thickness of 250 microns)

Theoretical Coverage = Volume Solids (%) X 10

(m2/litre) Dry Film Thickness (µ)
Practical Coverage 7.2 m2/litre (for dry film thickness of 100 microns)
:
(20% Loss Factor) 2.8 m2/litre (for dry film thickness of 250 microns)
Note : This theoretical coverage rate has been calculated from the volume solids of the material and is related to the amount of
coating applied onto a perfectly smooth surface without wastage. For a practical coverage rate, due allowance should be made
for atmospheric conditions, surface roughness, geometry of the article being coated, the skill of applicator, method of application
etc. when estimating quantities required for a particular job.

Performance Data:
Adhesion to Steel (ASTM D4541) : 950 p.s.i (abrasive blasted steel)
Impact Resistance (ASTM D2794) : Direct, 32 in.lb
Reverse, 10 in.lb
Salt Spray (ASTM B117) : No corrosion after 3000 hours exposure
Abrasion Resistance (ASTM D4060) : 90 mg weight loss per 1000 cycles - 1 kg load - CS17 wheel

General Properties:
1. Outstanding tolerance to manually prepared surfaces.
2. Excellent corrosion resistance through a combination of anti-corrosion pigments and rust
penetrants.
3. High tolerance where application over conventional coating systems such as aged alkyd system.
4. Excellent resistance to penetration by moisture and corrosive ions.
5. Simple application properties by brush or spray of Nippon 8048 offers effective corrosion
resistance in most industrial environments.
6. Can be used as a self-finishing system against a wide range of industrial chemicals.
7. Can be overcoated with a wide range of topcoats.
8. Provides a tough durable film with good weathering properties and excellent abrasion resistance.
9. Withstands continuous dry heat up to 100ºC.
10. Slight chalking under continuous exposure to sunlight but without detriment to performance
characteristic other than slight reduction in gloss.

Application Methods : Brush, roller, compressed air spray and airless spray.
Preferably use airless spray if a thicker coat is required in one
application. Brush, roller, compressed air spray generally lead
to lower film thickness, so more applications may be required
to obtain the recommended thickness per coat.

1) Brush/Roller : Recommended for small areas and touch-up only. Good

quality brushes and mohair/ short nap rollers should be used
with full strokes. Avoid rebrushing. Thin up to 10% - 15% by
volume of SA-65 Thinner for proper flow-out. Additional
coats may be required to achieve minimum specified film
thickness.
2) Spray : When airless spray is being used, excessive high tip spraying
pressure should be avoided. The minimum pressure at the
pump conducive with good atomisation should be used.

Guiding Data For Airless Spray : Delivery Pressure : 140-170 kg/cm2

: Tip Size : 0.015”-0.017”
: Spray Angle : 60 - 70°

Thinning : If necessary, add up to 5% thinner by volume for application

by brush, roller and airless spray; about 10%-15% by volume
for application by compressed air spray.

Mixing Ratio : 1 part by volume of Nippon 8048 (Base) to 1 part by volume

of Nippon 8048 (Hardener). Stir the content of the base
component, continue stirring the hardener and gradually add
the total contents of the hardener component, continue
stirring until a homogeneous mix is obtained.

Pot Life at 25°C to 30°C : 3 -4 hours after mixing

Thinner : SA-65 Thinner

Cleaning Solvent : SA-65 Thinner

Note: All equipment should be cleaned IMMEDIATELY with thinner after use. For thinning, substitute thinners other than those
approved or supplied by Nippon Paint may adversely affect the product performance and void product warranty whether
expressed or implied.
