Chapter 2

METHOD

This chapter discusses the research design, research locale, population

and sample, research instrument, statistical tools for data analysis and ethical

consideration.

Research Design

This study used the Descriptive-Correlational method of research. This

design was used in research studies that aimed to provide static pictures of

situations as well as establish the relationship between different variables, as cited

in 2020, this designed to determined the relationship of variables (X and Y). It

design is concerned with assessing relationships between two or more

phenomena. It involved a statistical measure of the degree of relationship, called

correlation. Furthermore descriptive-correlational design was the most useful

method in determining the significant relationship between the extent of time

management practices and the level of academic performance (McBurney &

White,2019),

Research Locale

The study was conducted in the Higher Education Program of Ramon

Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, located at Pioneer Avenue,Corner Roxas Avenue,

General Santos City. Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colle-ges (RMMC) derived its

name from one of the Philippine presidents, Pres. Ramon Magsaysay, founded on

August 3, 1987. It was the school’s late president Florante G. Millado who made a
21

personal request to Mrs. Luz Magsaysay, wife of former President Ramon

Magsaysay to use his name as the school’s name. This institution is a private

owned and non-sectarian college and the first institution in Region 12 accredited

by the Philippine Association of colleges and Universities-Commission on

Accreditation (PACUCOA). Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges offering various

2-year and 4-year courses in Information Technology, Accountancy, Liberal Arts,

Business, Engineering, Education, Criminology, and Social Work as well as

Graduate Studies in Education. It also offers complete basic education program

from elementary to high-school.

The Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges is committed to realize human

potentials through holistic education. The Education Department of Ramon

Magsaysay Memorial Colleges is in level III accredited by PACUCOA and now ISO

certified. Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. This is a private and non-

sectarian educational institution which strives to continue its mission and vision to

uphold and enhance students’ academic performance and be globally competitive

in terms of teaching-learning experience through continued offering of quality

education with the leadership of the school administrators.

Population and Sample

The respondents of this study were forty-two (42) 3rd year BSED-SCIENCE

students who were officially enrolled at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges

during the academic year 2022-2023. No sampling technique was employed

because the total population was less than 100. The researcher takes all the

population of the said respondents which was called the "Total Enumeration or

Total census.

Research Instrument

The instrument used in this study was a researcher-made survey

questionnaire. It was checked by the adviser to ensure correctness and validated

by the research experts. Revision was done after the validation. This instrument

was described using the five-point Likert scale: (5)- Always, (4)- Often, (3)-

Sometimes, (2)- Rarely, and (1)- Never. Emails, Google forms and face to face

were used in the distribution of questionnaires and retrieval of data. The

questionnaires were administered to the target respondents of the study.

Statistical Tools

Frequency and percentage were used to analyze the secondary data came

from the Registrar’s office, then Weighted Mean (WM) to determine the extent of

time management practices and the level of academic performance of the

respondents and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (Pearson r)

was used to determine the significant relationship between the two variables.

Ethical Consideration

In order to guarantee that research was carried out in accordance with

appropriate standards, research ethics were crucial. Respect for the individual and

confidentiality were the key ethical standards taken into consideration when

performing this research investigation. Consent from the respondents were

secured, and proper authorization to use the supplied data was also guaranteed.

For the sake of confidentiality, the questionnaires were not numbered. The

respondents certified in writing that the information gathered be kept private and

only researcher and statistician had the access to it. The research location

received letter to conduct the study.

Chapter 3

RESULT

This chapter presents the results and interpretations of the collected

information. Data being gathered using the survey questionnaire and secondary

data came from the Registrar’s office were analyzed using the Frequency and

Percentage, Weighted Mean (WM) and Pearson Product Moment Correlation

Coefficient (Pearson 𝑟). Results are presented using the following order: extent of

time management practices, level of academic performance, and the significant

relationship between variables.

Extent of Time Management Practices of the Respondents

This study aimed to determine the extent of time management practices of

3rd year BSED-Science students at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. It is

shown in Table 1 that it has an overall mean of 4.18. This generally means that the

students often practice those time management practices stipulated in the table.

In details, the results shows that indicator 10 has the highest computed

mean among all the indicators. This implies that the students prioritize the tasks

they have to do according to their importance and urgency (4.74), continually try

to find little ways to use my time more efficiently (4.40), and finish at least one thing

every day (4.29). Notice that indicator 2 and 5 have the lowest mean of 3.98 among

all the indicators, however it is still described as ‘often’.

Level of Academic Performance of the Respondents

This study would also aim to determine the level of academic performance

of 3rd year BSED Science students in the said institution. Table 2 shows that it has

a grand mean of approximately 93. This generally implies that the students are

rated as ‘very good’ in their academic performance.

Particularly, the result also affirms that majority of the students are

really ‘very good’ in their academics. They are the students who got a grade of 90

– 94.

It has the highest frequency value of 25 or 59% and it is followed by

students who are ‘excellent’ with a frequency value of 12 or 29%. It observed that

there are only 3 or 7% and 2 or 5% of the students who got a grade of 85 – 89 and

80 - 84 which are rated as ‘good’ and ‘satisfactory’, respectively.

28

Significant Relationship between Variables

In this part of the study, the researcher also has the objective of determining

if there exists a significant relationship between the extent of time management

practices and level of academic performance of BSED- Science students of

Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. Based on the early chapter of this paper,

this study has a null hypothesis of, “There is no significant relationship between

the extent of time management practices and level academic performance of the

respondents”, and consequently it has an alternative hypothesis of “There is a

significant relationship between the extent of time management practices and level

academic performance of the respondents”.

As shown on Table 3, the computed 𝑟𝑥𝑦 value obtained is 0.683 ≈ 0.68 which

denotes a strong correlation. It means that if the extent of time management

practices of a student is always, then its strongly affect his or her academic

performance. Conversely, if a student has an excellent grade academically, then

it is due to his or her extent of time management practices because the correlation

is just strong.

Likewise, since the computed t-value of 0.68 is greater than the critical

value of 0.304 at the 0.05 significance level (two-tailed test) and 0.393 at 0.01 with

the degree of freedom of 40 and has p-value of 0.00001<0.05. This means that

the result is significant. Thus, there is a relationship exists between variables.

Hence, the null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, there is a significant relationship

between the extent of time management practices and level of academic

performance of 3rd year BSED-General Science.

DISCUSSIONS

Presented in this chapter are the discussions, conclusion and

recommendation drawn from the results of the study on the extent of time

management practices and level of academic performance and determining if

there exists a significant relationship between them. Discussion is within the

parameters of the main objective of this study which is to improve the academic

performance of the students and know their time management practices.

It is shown in Table 1 that the respondents often practiced those time

management practices stipulated in the table. This implied that the students

prioritized the tasks they have to do according to their importance and urgency,

they continually try to find little ways to use their time more efficiently, and finish at

least one thing every day. Table 2 shown that the respondents were rated as ‘very

good’ in their academic performance. As shown in table 3, there was a relationship

exists between variables. Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. Therefore,

there was a significant relationship between the extent of time management

practices and level of academic performance of 3 rd year BSED-Science students

at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. Time management influences students'

academic achievement. The students who manage their time well perform better

academically (Erdemir & ,Tomar et al.,2019).

31

Conclusion

Based on the result of the study, the following conclusions were made:

The researcher concluded that the respondents often practiced those time

management practices stipulated in table 1.

The researcher was concluded that the level of respondents' academic

performance was ’‘very good’’. As a result, the students are familiar with the

procedure for planning and allocating their time among various tasks.

The researcher was concluded that there was a significant relationship

between the extent of time management practices and the level of academic

performance of 3rd year BSED- Science students at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial

Colleges.

Recommendation

School Administrators may give training workshops, seminars and

lectures may be conducted for students that may help students allocate the

proper amount of time for each subject and reach a greater level of academic

performance and accomplishment. Seminars and lectures.

Teachers/Instructors to improve time management practices and

academic performaces of the students.

Students may learn time management skills and how to use their time

properly.

Parents also need to pay attention on children at homes at guide them

how to manage time in academics as well as in domestic issues. This thing may

help students to become habitual to manage time appropriately .
