CHAPTER II

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered through the questionnaire

conducted to the ICT and Non ICT Instructors of Bohol Island State University

Calape and Clarin Bohol Campuses. The information are herein presented in

tables, subjected to statistical treatment, analyzed and interpreted according to

the various aspects of the problems posted in this study. The survey included the

profile instructors in Calape and clarin campuses in terms of sex, the level of ICT

competency among the instructors, the common problems encountered by

instructors in using ICT in teaching and to what extent do they feel such

problems.

Profile of the Respondents. Table II presents the profile of the

respondents. It shows that out of the fifty four instructors who participated in this

study, forty nine or 28.16 percent were males while thirty five or 64.81 percent

females. It is very clear that the female respondents outnumbered the male ones.

Age Fifteen or 27.78 percent were at ages from 20 to 24 years old,

considered the youngest: and two or 3.70 percent, 56 to 60 years old which is

considered as the oldest among the respondents.


Educational Qualification The majority of the respondents of the study

was a graduate of Secondary Education as noted by twenty four or 44.44

percent, eight or 14.81 was a graduate of BSN, seven or 12.96 percent, BS

Agriculture, four 7.41 percent, BSCS, two or 3.70 percent, BSIT, and one or 1.85

percent finished Computer Engineering, AB Philo, BS Management, BS

Psychology, BS Home Economics, BS Bio, AB literature, and BS information

technology.

Length of service/ Years of teaching. Twenty or 40.74 percent had been

in the field for at least 3 years below, sixteen or 29.63 percent, for 4 to 6 years;

nine or 16.67, for 7 to 10 year; and seven or 12.96 had already been teaching for

10 years and above.

Professional Growth, Fifteen or 27.78 percent of the respondents had

units in Masteral degree, ten or 18.52 percent, a graduate of Masteral degree;

seven or 12.96 percent, had units of PhD; and 3 or 5.56 percent, a PhD holder.

Seminars and Training attended. For the ICT instructors four or 7.41

percent had attended a seminar in AM and TM in computer, only one or 1.85

percent had attended the Office Automation Seminar/Workshop in MS Windows

and MS XP, and three or 5.56 percent the seminar in 2d and 3d AutoCAD.

Non ICT seminars. Four or 7.41 percent had attended the seminar in

Global Internet Surfing, thirteen or 24.07 percent attended the seminar on

Computer Literacy/Windows/Technical on Surfing Global Information through


Internet, and six or 11.11 percent has attended the seminar in ICT for Teacher

Education.

Department Connected. Twenty three or 42.59 of the respondents were

connected to the College of Teacher Education, twenty three or 42.59 percent

were to the College of Technology and Allied Sciences, and eight or 14.81 per

cent, to Health and Allied Sciences.

From the data, one could deduce that a great majority of the teacher-

respondents were females, with ages from 20 to 30; a graduate of BSED and

had been in the field for less than 3 years. Some had units in M.A and even

finished the degree. A great number were connected to College of Teacher

Education and College of Technology and Allied Sciences.

Level of ICT competency among the Instructors of BISU Calape and

Clarin Campuses.

Table III records the level of ICT competency among the instructors of

BISU Calape and Clarin Campuses. There are three aspect of competency level.

The first is the Professional Learning and Understanding of Concepts of the

instructors in ICT. In this aspect, the respondents were made to give choices as

Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. The numerical weights were: 4, 3, 2 and 1

respectively.

The information revealed that twenty six items were noted Very Good by

the instructors themselves. These were Item 1.1, Turning on and off the

computers (Shutting down), and item 1.1.3 in performing file management in

transferring files both obtained the highest rating of 3.89 weighted mean. This

was followed by item 1.2, Start and exits a computer program, item 1.3,

Minimize, maximize and move windows on the desktop, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, in

deleting files and renaming it in performing file management. Both acquire a

mean weight of 3.83. This is so because the skills aforecited were considered

as the most basic skills that a computer user will perform in manipulating the

computer. Compared to other advance skills in operating a computer unit this

could be performed even with a person with an average knowledge and skills in

computer system.

Meanwhile, the instructors also noted that they only have a fair professional

learning and understanding of the concept of ICT was on item 1.8.5 in using the

MS Office Program which is MS Office OneNote which only has the weighted

mean of 2.44. The composite mean yielded 3.46, described as Very Good.

ICT Pedagogical Skills

Every facts and skills in different genre in human progress has to be

acquired wither it is about a musical skills or dancing skills it could be learned and

mastered, the same as learning the basic skills in manipulating a computer system

no matter how complicated it is. This study determines the level of pedagogical

skills of the instructors BISU Calape and Clarin campuses in terms of how far their

knowledge and how they use ICT in their teaching profession so that proper ICT

skills and Instructional program will be provided to them based on their skills that

already acquired.

There are eleven major pedagogical skills portrayed in Table IV. In every

major skills portrayed the respondents are given the choices as Always, (4)

Sometimes, (3) Seldom, (2) and Never (1).

The used of database, the instructors noted all of the items as

Sometimes, the item that obtained the highest rating was item number 2.1, I used

database in school reports that received 3.07 weighted mean, and the item which
received the least weighted mean was item number 2.4.1, regular updates of the

students information in dropouts had a weighted mean of 2.72. It yielded to a

weighted mean of 2.91 described as Sometimes.

The used of Spreadsheets. Of the seven items enumerated under this

aspect, the item that obtained the highest rating of Always using spreadsheet was

item 2.2.3, I use spreadsheet in making reports, this received a weighted mean of

3.3.28; while item 2.6.7, on the other hand, I use spreadsheet in statistical

applications, was noted by the instructors as the lowest item that obtained a weighted

mean of 2.72 described as Sometimes. This aspect has a composite mean of 2.92

described as Sometimes.

The used of Presentations Graphics, videos, audio & other media in

the classroom. On this aspect the instructors noted as the highest rating was item

2.3.2 I used presentations Graphics, videos, audio & other media in the classroom on

film showing that obtained the weighted mean of 3.37 described as Always. While

the rest of the items were claimed by the instructors that they only used presentations

Graphics, videos, audio & other media in the classroom as Sometimes with item

2.4.5, as the least among the noted skills, having a mean weight of 2.28. That yielded

to 3.39 composite mean described as Sometimes.


The used of MS word. On this aspect the instructors noted mostly of the

items as they Always use MS word in their teaching profession and noted that item

2.4.1, making of reports as the highest rating with a weighted mean of 3.78,

while there is only one item noted as Sometimes which is item 2.4.3, Book keeping

Information that has only a weighted mean of 3.13 and yielded to a composite mean

of 3.49 described as Always.

The used of concept mapping. On this aspect the instructors all noted that

they only use concept mapping as Sometimes in their teaching profession in which

item number 2.5.3, Allowing students to more clearly communicate ideas, thoughts

and information which has a weighted mean of 3.00, and the item that has a least

weighted mean of 2.85 was item number 2.5.1, Helping students brainstorm and

generate new ideas. It yielded to a composite mean of 2.94 described as

Sometimes.

The used of ICT communication tools like Email, SMS, Website Portals,

forums, Blogs, text, video, audio, and chat. Of the four items listed in this aspect,

all the instructors unanimously in noting that they Seldom used ICT communication

tools like Email, SMS, Website Portals, forums, Blogs, text, video, audio, and chat, in

which item number 2.6.1, students submission of assignments has a highest rating

which have a weighted mean of 2.43 and item number 2.6.4, Student online
discussions has a least weighted mean of 2.15. It yielded to a composite mean of

2.28 described as Seldom.

The used of ICT to promote students creative and problem solving

skills. On this aspect instructors also noted that they Seldom use ICT to promote

students creative and problem solving skills, in which item 2.7.1, Creative thinking

through Collaboration in web base activities has the highest rating of 2.17, and item

number 2.7.2, Design and creation of their own resources and item number 2.7.3,

Work and play resources has only a weighted mean of 2.15 and yielded to a

composite mean of 2.15 described as Seldom.

The used of ICT to promote students decision making on the following:

The instructors noted all of the items on this aspect as Sometimes in which item

number 2.8.1, I used of ICT to promote students decision making on gathering and

identifying information which has only 2.74 weighted mean and the least weighted

mean of all the items is number 2.8.5, speculating and evaluating which have a

weighted mean of 2.56 and yielded into a composite mean of 2.64 described as

Sometimes.

The use of various multimedia materials for the reports & class

presentations. On this aspect item number 2.9.1, I use various multimedia materials

for the reports & class presentations like Microsoft Power point was noted by the
instructors as Always that has a highest weighted mean of 3.33, other instructors

noted item number 2.9.4, I use various multimedia materials for the reports & class

presentations like Movie maker noted as Sometimes that has a weighted mean of

2.52, Others noted item number 2.9.2, Prize which has a weighted mean of 1.85 ,

and item number 2.9.5, Flash Presentation that has a weighted mean of 2.35 as

Seldom and majority of the instructors noted item number 2.9.3, Aurora 3d as Never

that has a weighted mean of 1.69, and yielded to a composite mean of 2.35

described as Seldom.

The use of electronic means of administering quizzes & examinations.

On the three items listed on these aspect item number 2.10.1, the use of Google

Form as an electronic means of administering quizzes & examinations obtained the

highest rating that has a weighted of 1.80 described as Seldom, While item number

2.10.2, Online Quiz maker has the obtained the 2 nd rating of 1.65 noted by the

instructors as the Never use an electronic means of administering quizzes &

examinations, and item number 2.10.3, I use Electronic Quiz maker as an electronic

means of administering quizzes & examinations as Never and obtained the lowest

weighted mean of 1.63 noted as Never and yielded to a composite mean of 1.69

described as Never.
I Set up online databases or repositories of student works. The instructors

noted on this aspect as they Seldom Set up online databases or repositories of

student works in which the highest was item number 2.11.3, the use of face book that

has a weighted mean of 2.20 while on the other hand the instructors noted item

number 2.11.1, the use of weebly as an online databases or repositories of student

works that has a weighted mean of 1.56 noted as Never, and yielded into a

composite mean of 1.94 described as Seldom. For the reason that mostly of the

instructors are inclined to the traditional way of saving and storing their student

works.

The overall composite mean yielded to 2.59 described as Sometimes.

ICT Social & Ethical Skills. In the field of Information and

Communication Technology, one cannot judge a person that he is incapable of

using a computer unit just because he does know how to configure a simple

application of any computer system for the reason that ICT has a very broad

spectrum, It is not just about how good an individual in the actual manipulation

of a computer unit, it could also be used in different means, for example it could

be apply in a form of a communication. Communication that could be either be

used for school purposes or most especially as an individual we also have our

own social obligation not only for our field of work but also for our personal

benefits as well.

On this realm the respondents were made to identify if they were

Always, Sometimes, Seldom, or Never use ICT in their Social & Ethical Skills.

To quantify these qualitative responses they were assigned to corresponding

weight equivalents of 4, 3, 2 and 1, respectively. These are all reflected in Table

IV.

The respondents noted that only item number 1, I maintain a Facebook

account and item number 2, I stay connected with friends and all people through

Facebook, Twitter, My Space, and Emails. Has the greatest weighted mean in

which item number 1 has gain 3.54 and item number 2 obtain 3.33 and noted as

Always, while the other respondents has noted most of the items as Seldom

utilize or mostly does not even have, In which the highest item which is item

number 7, I regularly updated my profile which has a weighted mean of 2.48 and
the lowest item which is item number 10, I regularly post blog that has a

weighted mean of 1.8. While item number 3, I maintain my space account has

noted by the respondents as the lowest described as Never that has a weighted

mean of 1.72. It yielded into 2.35 composite mean described as Seldom. This is

due to the basis that mostly of the respondents is only using ICT in a form

communication for occupational purposes.

Common Problems Encountered By Instructors In Using ICT Table

VI presents the problems encountered, The problems are mainly focusing on the

area were in as instructors they are affected because of the reason of un

availability of the materials that could be utilize at the same time the capability of

the instructors of utilizing the facilities of ICT.

The respondents were made to specify their responses as to whether

these problems were Very Serious, Moderately Serious, Slightly Serious, or

Not Serious. To quantify these qualitative responses, they were assigned in

weight equivalents of 4, 3, 2 and 1, respectively.

Common Problems Encountered By Instructors In Using ICT. On this

aspect the respondents noted, that only item number 4, Lack of ICT equipment

for instructors as Moderately Serious and obtain a weighted mean of 2.67.

While the rest of the items were noted by them as Less Serious in which the

highest was item number 9 Lack of appropriate administrative support for

Facilities/ Equipment and Capability Building that both obtain a weighted mean

of 2.46. On the other hand a few of the respondents noted some of the items as

Not Serious in which the highest item was item number 2, Resistance to

change from traditional to ICT trends that obtain a weighted mean of 1.83 and

the lowest which is item number 7, Lack of basic skills for ICT’s.

It yielded into a composite mean of 2.04 described as Less Serious.

May be for the reason that mostly of the respondents have not felt the needs of

facilities of ICT to be utilized in their instructions and ICT trainings and ICT

capability building is not yet given importance for the time being.

Focus Group Discussion (FGD)

An FGD was conducted to validate the respondents’ responses and to

have an in depth understanding of their different situations they encountered in

the use of ICT. Structured questions were prepared by the researcher before he

grouped the respondents.

Results. On ICT Pedagogical Skills. The first question asked to them

was about the data base, if they are familiar with its concept. Their responses

were: Familiar sa concept, Collection sya of records, List that is already save or

When asked if they know what MS Office suit is and what is in it that they

like and its relevance to their work. They said Yes, Kabalo, Familiar kaau kay

instructions, magama mi exams, handouts, grades. Very relevant, making

reports, gama handouts, gamit sa instructions, make accomplishments reports,

When asked if they are familiar with MS publisher? MS one note? or MS

Outlook and use them in the class as instructor. Their responses were; Nakakita

Would you like that there will be a yearly in service training on the
