Access Statement: Access is at the discretion of the learning


environment. However, it would be beneficial if
the learner has National Proficiency II, B.E.C.E or
had an equivalent qualification or level of
experience.

Unit Introduction: On completion of this unit the learner will be able to


start a new business.

Performance Criteria:
a. Explain the processes of recognizing business opportunities
b. Gather data for a new business
c. Generate business ideas in your trade area
d. Select idea for a new business

Range Statement:

Processes of recognizing business opportunities: Government policies, braining storming,


critical observation, hobby, research and observation.

Gather data for a new business: Interviews, questionnaires, observations

Evidence Requirements:
Written and oral evidence of the learner ability to explain the process of recognizing
business opportunities, gather data for a new business, generate business ideas in your
trade area and select idea for a new business

Range Statement:

Source Documents: receipts, invoice, waybill, proforma invoice, pay


voucher, pay-in –slip, bank cheque.

Record books: ledgers, and journals

Evidence Requirements:

Written or oral evidence of learners’ ability to explain, record keeping and Transaction,
outline the benefits of record keeping, distinguish between: ‘Money, cash and cheques,
Notes, coins and currency’; and explain source Documents and record books

Unit Title: Starting a New Business

SPECIAL NOTES
1) The basic infrastructure, which will be convenient to facilitate learning for this
unit, is a normal sized classroom with all the basic requirements and a standard
workshop, which will be suitable for not more than twenty (20) learners for each
session. The required learning materials for this should be provided during
facilitation. The equipment should include occupational standards, unit
specification, learning materials, projector, laptop, marker, flip chart, real objects
and white board.
2) The standard of the workshop and classroom should comply with the Factories,
Offices and Shop 1970 (Act 328). The minimum qualification of a facilitator to be
able to handle this unit effectively should be a National Certificate II in
Entrepreneurship or its equivalent with a minimum of two (2) years working
experience.

SUPPORT NOTES:
This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the
support notes is mandatory.
NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH:
The Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET)
allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement
of the stated standards by a learner whose starting point is as described in the access
statement. The use of notional design length for this unit is 15 hours. The use of notional
design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only.

PURPOSE:
The unit is designed to provide the learners with the knowledge and skill for Starting a
new business. The development of skills and knowledge will be progressive from
working individually to working as a team/group in the classroom.
CONTENT/CONTEXT:
This mandatory unit will be undertaken in a situation where learners will be expected to
achieve a level of National Certificate I.

WAYS TO DELIVER THE UNIT:-


The content of this unit are weighted towards the acquisition of practical skills and
knowledge
with emphasis placed on the learners’ central activity.
Learning and facilitating approaches will be adapted to the pace of the learner.

Approaches to generating evidence


The achievement of the underpinning knowledge required for this unit would be assisted
by the use of hands – on experience. Facilitators should help learners to demonstrate
practical knowledge step by step until the learner feels confident. The safety factor should
be thoroughly emphasized consistently.

Progression:
The unit forms part for the National Certificate I level and upon successful completion
the learner may progress to National Certificate II. Each unit is a separate part of the
framework for the award and unit are not necessarily taken in a prescribed order,
although there are a logical sequence to the acquisition of the skill and knowledge
concerned. . This unit should be taking as a standalone unit for the award of certificate of
competence on the NTVETQF
