DEFINITION : GRAPEVINE

 Is the informal transmission of information , gossip or rumour spread from person to person
(Srivastava and Purohit, 2021)

CAUSES OF THE GRAPEVINE

 Lack of formal communication.


 Fear and anxiety.
 Personal relationship and social interaction.
 Emotions of the employees.
 Desire of social correction.
 Interest in organization politics.
 Jobs itself.

BENEFITS AND POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS

BENEFITS;

 Alternative system: formal system not capable to provide information to all in some cases
and this gape is covered by informal system
 Discloses grievances: the employees disclose without any hesitation their needs, sentiments
and their emotions to their authority.
 Easy interpretation: under the formal system the information is giuven by the top level
management so in informal system it is for the employees to take the explanation and
information
 Rapid communication : informal communication transmits very fast than formal
communication in an organization
 Efficiency increased: employees are able to discuss their problems and find their solutions
and it can also improve productivity in the work system
 Send recommendations: employees easily inform their superior about their demands and
their problems and the way to develop the implementation system of the work. Also
provides an opportunity to send the recommendation to their management.

DRAWBACKS;

 Impossible to maintain secrecy of information: in informal communication system


communication is made by open discussion by doing so it will become impossible to
maintain the secrecy of the information
 Spreads rumor: rumor spreads rapidly and the original information is transformed as wrong
information.
 Information distorted: in most cases the meaning and the subject matter of the information
is distorted in this system
 Difficulty in controlling: in informal in communication there is no ground for rules that is it is
difficult to control the information that is disseminated.

WAYS OF DEALING WITH THE GRAPEVINE

 Enhance formal communication


 Foster a culture transparency
 Active listening and feedback mechanism
 Lead by example
 Address rumors and misinformation
 Keeping employees informed
 Spot your internal influence
