2.16.1 Removal of the Tone Ring

Special tools are required for this procedure.

Remove as follows:

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut down the engine, and set the parking brake.
Chock the tires.
2. Disconnect the batteries at the negative post, including the batteries for the auxiliary
HVAC, if equipped.
3. Drop the front of the driveline. For instructions, see the Vehicle Workshop Manual.
4. Remove the yoke (3). Refer to section "Removal of the Yoke or Flange" .
NOTE: The tone ring can become deformed from the torque applied to the yoke, which
will make it difficult to slide over the output splines.
NOTICE:
Use care not to scar the seal surface of the range housing, or to bend the output tone ring
(2) during the seal removal.

5. Using a slide hammer with a seal-puller attachment (special tools DDE W 602 589
00 33 00 and 715 589 09 33 00), remove the output shaft seal (2).
6. Remove the tone ring (1).
