Lab Activity
Separating a Solution
I. Objective
To explain the intermolecular forces occurring in a separation of a
solution.

II. Materials
2 Erlenmeyer flasks 250 mL bottle of acetone
Blue or red glitter 30 mL water
Yellow liquid food coloring 15 g salt (NaCl)
Empty plastic bottle Measuring spoon (optional)
III. Procedure
1. Fill one flask with 35 mL of acetone, followed by a teaspoon of red or
blue glitter. Shake the flask to combine the ingredients.
2. Fill the other flask with 30 mL water and add a drop of yellow food
coloring. Shake the flask to mix the ingredients.
3. Pour the yellow water in the empty plastic bottle, followed by the
acetone with glitter. Cover the bottle tightly and shake it. Observe
what happens to the solution.
4. Now remove the cap and add 15 g of salt to the solution. Cover the
bottle and shake it once more. Observe and analyze what happens to
the solution.
IV. Analysis
1. What change happened to the solution after you added 15 g of salt?
Describe the mixture before and after the salt was added.
