Changes
Key concept: Related Global context: Identities and Relationships
Change concept(s): (Transitions)
Consequences,
Transformation

Change is the transition from one state to another that transforms the identities and
relationships of substances or organisms.
ATL:
Self-Management Skills: Reflective Skills- Make guesses, ask “what if” questions and
generate testable hypothesis
Thinking Skills: Transfer skills- Inquire in different contexts to gain a different perspective.

assignment: 30 min. Taken:

Part 1: Kitchen Chemistry: Bouncing Slime

Students from Grade 6 carried out an experiment to create the bounciest slime. They
varied the quantity of one of the ingredients used for making the slime to check the
bounciness of slime by dropping it from a height of 1 meter.
Given below is the method they used for making the slime.
Method:
Part 1:
1. Add 50 mL Elmer’s glue to a 250 cm3 beaker.
2. Add 10 g of sodium bicarbonate and mix thoroughly.
3. Add 2 mL water and mix thoroughly.
4. Slowly add 1 mL contact lens solution and mix.
5. Remove the slime from the beaker and knead until it begins to harden. Roll it
into a sphere.
6. Drop the slime from a height a 1m, recording the vertical distance it bounces.
Part 2:
1. Change the quantity of contact lens solution and make the slime again.
2. Repeat step 6 from part one.
Results:
Attempt 1:
Substance Quantity Height recorded (cm)
Elmer’s Glue 50 mL
Sodium bicarbonate 10 gram
Contact lens solution 1 mL
Water 2mL 28 cm
Attempt 2:
Substance Quantity Height recorded (cm)
Elmer’s Glue 50 mL
Sodium bicarbonate 10 gram
Contact lens solution 1.5 mL
Water 2 mL 30 cm

Physical & Chemical Changes
state burn reversible physical melt irreversible different particles
colour chemical

If you heat ice it will ____ into water. This is a _________ change. Physical changes often
involve a change of _____. They are __________ which means they can be easily undone.
In a physical change, no new material is formed.
If you heat bread it will _____ and become toast. Burning is a ________ change.
Chemical changes are ______________ meaning they are difficult to undo. We can
sometimes recognise chemical changes because we see a ______ change. In a chemical
change, new materials formed that are _________ to the starting materials. This is
because the _________ become rearranged.
1. Write down an example of a chemical change.

3. When a chemical change happens we sometimes see a colour change. Predict
some other observations that might tell you that a chemical change is
happening.

4. Look at the diagram of particles below. Identify whether it is a chemical or

physical change. Is the change transforming the identity of the substance?
