- Solids have a fixed shape and volume. Examples include a book, a pen, or a rock.
- Liquids have a fixed volume but can change shape, conforming to the shape of the container. Examples
include water, oil, or juice.
- Gases have neither a fixed shape nor volume. They expand to fill the container they’re in. Examples
include the air we breathe, helium in a balloon, or steam from a boiling pot of water.
There’s also a fourth state of matter, known as plasma, which is a superheated form of gas where the
particles are ionized.
