Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It is all around us.

Everything we see, touch, smell,


and taste is made up of matter.

Matter is typically classified in three states: solid, liquid, and gas.

- Solids have a fixed shape and volume. Examples include a book, a pen, or a rock.

- Liquids have a fixed volume but can change shape, conforming to the shape of the container. Examples
include water, oil, or juice.

- Gases have neither a fixed shape nor volume. They expand to fill the container they’re in. Examples
include the air we breathe, helium in a balloon, or steam from a boiling pot of water.

There’s also a fourth state of matter, known as plasma, which is a superheated form of gas where the
particles are ionized.
