CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Petchay (Brasica rapa) is a leafy, shallow-rooted, cool-seasoned crop but can

stand higher temperature given it is exposed to enough moisture. It is an erect
biennial herb cultivated as an annual about 15-30 cm tall in vegetative stage. Its
leaves are ovate, spirally and widely arranged. It can grow easily in a container and a
very popular vegetable in Chinese and Southeast Asia cuisine.
Mushroom compost is specifically a mixed type of compost that is used for
growing mushrooms. Once the compost is no longer commercially viable for producing
mushrooms on mass scale, the spent mushroom compost is commonly used for
growing mushrooms or other vegetables on smaller scales or it can be used as general
compost in the garden. Some of the benefits are: it supplies macronutrients to the soil,
it is high in organic matter, which increases the water-holding capacity of the soil to
boost the activity of beneficial soil microbes, suitable for most garden plants, both
edibles and ornamentals, eco-friendly, has mild nitrogen content, high in calcium,
effective mulch and attracts Earthworms.
14-14-14 or triple 14 is a type of fertilizer that provides plants like vegetables
and lawns with a healthy boost. It is also called as complete fertilizer. It contains
minerals the plant needs to grow quickly and healthy. This fertilizer contains 14%
nitrogen, 14% phosphorus, 14% potassium. Nitrogen helps in photosynthesis as it
contains chlorophyll which is important for the process. Phosphorus helps improve
the growth of the plant, and lastly, potassium is essential for plant growth, increases
the protein intake of the plant and promotes root growth and protects it from dying
The purpose of our laboratory is for us to analyze the difference of using
organic, inorganic and mix as fertilizers especially in petchay. By observing the growth
of the plant, we can identify which plant is robust and healthy. Providing all the
important necessities such as enough water, sunlight and cleaning the weeds our
main focus is on the effects of applying organic fertilizer rather than using synthetic
fertilizer/ inorganic fertilizer.

MATERIALS AND METHOD
MATERIALS NEEDED:
These are the different materials used:
Garden hoe
Garden rake
Garden shovel
Garden trowel
Garden gloves
Water source
Pruning shears
Loppers
Garden fork
Spade
During our field gardening most of our materials was burrowed from the
schools. Ma’am Analiza Simangon was in-charge of the tools used. Some of them are
hoe, shovel, garden fork, grab hoe and bolo. Water is not a problem in our case
because the site is near the river and sprinkler was used to water the plants. Seedling
came from an agricultural supply which we bought and plant.
LABORATORY PROCEDURES
The site of our garden is near the river banks which makes it convenient for
water supply but not a good site for gardening because it is an open area for the
community and anytime they can easily weed it as they like.

the laboratory. The first process is the selection of area

PEST MANAGEMENT:

In addressing the damage and effect of pest in our plant, the members then find and kill the vegetable
pest eating our petchay. After that we remove those leaves damaged in order to avoid contamination to
those undamaged leaves. Weeding then is conducted.
