WHY DOES IT WORK?

SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Bisect an acute angle

b ABCD is a rhombus since all the sides are equal but the corners aren’t right angles.
d Diagonals of rhombuses are perpendicular (they meet at 90).
e The construction works because by keeping the radii the same, you actually create the four vertices
of a rhombus. The original line and the line you draw are the diagonals of this rhombus.

TASK 2 Bisect an obtuse angle

The following construction shows the bisection of  JKL. The radius of the small arcs is different to
the radius of the large arc.

b KJML is a kite since two pairs of adjacent sides are equal.

d Diagonals of kite are perpendicular (they meet at 90).
e The construction works because by keeping the radii for pairs of arcs the same, you actually create
the four vertices of a kite. The original line and the line you draw are the diagonals of this kite.
