STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Title: REVERSE ENGINEERING PROCEDURE No. SOP 018-12
1.1 Purpose
To define the way of Reverse Engineering Process in SMI.

1.2 Scope
All Reverse Engineering Parts

Reverse engineering shall be considered only for non-patented designs or for patented
designs for which the patent covering the design has expired. It is the responsibility of
the requester to make sure that patent (if applicable) is not being violated. SMI will
not indemnify or compensate any OEMs against patent infringement. If there is any
concern regarding issues involving patents, the Legal Department at SMI should
immediately be consulted.

2.2 Details

CUSTOMER SAMPLES RECEIVING & IDENTIFICATION

 Customer sample receiving, identification & generating sample report / initial

inspection report (if applicable) as per SOP 018-07.

2.2.1 REVERSE ENGINEERING

 Reverse engineering will take place, when unavailability of customer casting drawing
& 3D model. If customer casting drawing / 3D model available, SOP 018-05 & SOP
018-07 will be followed.
 Design Engineer will study the sample to decide, the part is required scanning or not.
 For simple part (without complex profile) 3D scanning not required and the part
having complex profile 3D scanning is must.
 Prior to scanning, Design Engineer will take the required dimensions manually to
generate initial 2D drawing for CMM inspection (if required). Initial 2D drawing
contains the dimensions to be measured in CMM.
 Upon completion of initial 2D drawing, sample along with 2D drawing will be
forward to QC for CMM inspection.
 Upon receipt of CMM report from QC, Design Engineering will review the CMM
report to ensure all the required dimensions are measured. If any missing dimensions
found, again the sample will be forward to QC to measure the missing dimensions.

2.2.2 SAMPLE PREPARATION FOR 3D SCANNING

 There are two ways to process the 3D Scanning.
1. Destructive method: This method to follow, when 3D scanner cannot capture the
internal profile or not possible to take the internal profile using polyester filler
paste.
2. Non- Destructive method: This method to follow, when 3D scanner can capture
the internal profile or possible to take the internal profile using polyester filler
paste.
 The sample will be prepared for scanning according to one of the methods above.
Design Engineer will determine the best ways & locations to cut the sample if
required.
 Manufacturing engineer will cut/machine the sample as per recommendations, the
sample will be cleaned from debris & burrs & sharp edges by the pattern maker,
forward to design engineer.
 Design engineer will scan the sample using 3D Scanner.
 The scanned sample file will be saved in the project folder on PDM-Vault.
 Design Engineer will edit the scanned file using the adequate software
 The complete 3D model will be created by Solidworks and SOP 018-05 & SOP018-
07 will be followed.

2.2.3 INSPECTION PROCESS BY 3D SCANNING

 Laser-scanning may be used to inspect reversed-engineered parts or any other

components (if applicable).
 The part shall be prepared as stated in paragraph 2.2.2.
 Datum reference planes shall be captured during scanning.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Title: REVERSE ENGINEERING PROCEDURE No. SOP 018-12

 A 3D scan file shall be generated. Continued..

 The scanned file shall be compared against an approved 3D file. The acceptance
tolerances shall be set as per customer requirements or SMI standard if not stated in
customer PO.
 This comparison shall be part of the inspection report.
