Summary of Changes
1 Scope
This Specification, together with the Data Sheets, defines the mandatory
requirements for totally enclosed squirrel cage induction motors rated from 0.75
kW (1 HP) to and including 370 kW (500 HP). Specifications of machines rated
above 1 kV shall comply with Section 5 of this Specification (Modifications to
Industry Standard IEEE 841). Otherwise, machines’ specifications shall comply
with Section 6 (Modifications to Industry Standard IOGP-S-703). Unless
otherwise specified, sections in this specification do not apply to explosion proof
motors.
2 Conflicts and Deviations
Any conflicts between this document and other applicable Mandatory Saudi
Aramco Engineering Requirements (MSAERs) shall be addressed to the
EK&RD Coordinator.
Any deviation from the requirements herein shall follow internal company
procedure SAEP-302.

Exception:
Induction motors may be supplied by a local motor vendor subsidiary that has the capability to
manufacture in-kingdom a complete motor (stator, rotor, frame) based on the parent company’s
proven design, with a complete 3-year standard warranty. The motors shall be fully tested in-
kingdom at the local vendor’s site as per Saudi Aramco specification requirements. The
manufacturer’s proven design must have been previously manufactured at an approved plant
location and adhere to the above Qualification requirements.
5 Modifications to Industry Standard (IEEE 841)
The following clause numbers refer to IEEE 841 - 2009, which is part of this
Specification. The text in each clause below is an addition to IEEE 841 unless it
is noted as an exception. Clause numbers not appearing in IEEE 841 are new
clauses to be inserted in numerical order. Clause numbers appearing in IEEE
841 that are not modified are not repeated in this specification.
1 Overview
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 (Exception) Fractional horsepower, non-explosion proof, shall comply
with NEMA MG 1 or IEC 60034.
(Exception) IEC 60072 series may be used for dimensions and output.
1.3 Explosion Proof Motors
Where explosion proof construction is specified or required because of
the area classification, the motor shall meet either the Underwriters
Laboratories (UL) listing requirements of UL 674 or equivalent. Motors
for use in Class I or II, Zone 1, hazardous locations as defined by
ANSI/NFPA 70, or IEC-60079, shall be certified by a third-
partycertifier/certification body. Explosion proof motors do not have to
conform to the requirements specified in this document, except for the
testing requirements of IEEE 841, Section 9.
1.4 Motors for Class 1, Zone 2 Locations
Motors specified for Class 1, Zone 2 hazardous locations shall meet
ANSI/NFPA 70, or IEC-60079, requirements for this application.
Unless the space heaters are approved for Class 1, Zone 2 locations, the
temperature exposed surfaces of space heaters (based upon a 50°C
ambient) shall not exceed 80% of the ignition temperature in °C of the
gas or vapor involved when operated at the specified voltage.
1.5 Inspection Requirements
Refer to Saudi Aramco Inspection Requirement Form 175-170200, for
inspection requirements.
3 Service Conditions
3.2 Unusual Service Conditions
Unless otherwise specified, motors conforming to this specification shall
be suitable for operation in accordance with their rating while exposed to
ambient temperatures in the range of 0°C to 50°C.
4 Ratings
4.2 Frame Assignment
(Exception) Motors' frame sizes shall comply with NEMA MG-1 or
IEC-60072.
4.3 Voltage and Frequency Ratings
(Exception) Motors supplied under this specification shall comply with the
following table:
Introduction
Exception: replace (IOGP S-703D) with Saudi Aramco customized data sheet
(IOGP S-703D-Aramco).
Exception: replace (IOGP S-703Q) with Saudi Aramco customized quality
requirements (IOGP S-703Q-Aramco).
Exception: delete “The data sheet and IRS are published as editable
documents for the purchaser to specify application specific requirements. This
supplementary specification and the QRS are fixed documents.”
Exception: delete “The order of precedence (highest authority listed first) of the
documents shall be:”
1 Scope
1.2 Exception: non-explosion proof motors less than 746 W (fractional
horsepower) shall comply with NEMA MG 1 or IEC 60034.
1.4 Exception: delete section 1.4
6 Site conditions
Addition: Unless otherwise specified, motors conforming to this
specification shall be suitable for operation in accordance with their
rating while exposed to ambient temperatures in the range of 0°C to
50°C.
8 Thermal performance and tests
8.1 Thermal class
Exception: For motors at 50°C ambient temperature, the maximum
temperature rise shall not exceed 70°C for class F insulation.
9.12.1 Starting
9.12.1.3 Addition: Purchaser will provide load speed vs. torque curve and
load Wk² when motor is purchased separately from driven
equipment.
11.3.2 Rotor
11.3.2.2 Exception: Maximum vibration magnitude shall be in accordance
to Vibration Grade B.
11.3.2.4 Addition: Motors shall be fitted with replaceable shaft seals of the
non-contacting while rotating type. Seals shall be fitted on both
the drive end and non-drive end of the shaft.
11.3.5 Bearings
Document History
18 November 2021 Major revision to overlay this specification on IOGP S-703 for
motors rated at 1 kV or below, and IEEE 841 on motors rated
above 1 kV.
29 October 2018 Major revision to:
• Address the qualifications requirements for suppliers, which is
becoming less strict, in alignment with the most major
commodities.
• Allow motors in the range of 250HP to 500HP to be either 460V
or 4kV.
• Mandate nonmetallic for the motor internal fans.
8 April 2018 Major revision regarding:
• Local vendor manufacturer qualification.
• Rated voltage level options for 250-500 HP motors.
• Fan material to be made of conductive plastic.
8 March 2016 Minor revision to align rated voltage requirement of 17-SAMSS-
503 with SAES-P-113.
• To align temperature rise requirement of 17-SAMSS-503 with
SAES-P-113.
• To remove the overlap between 17-SAMSS-503 and 17-
SAMSS-502 at the 500 HP size. This will enhance clarity and
align the two SAMSS.
• To align the space heater voltage with the available SAES-P-100
standard voltages.
26 October 2015 Major revision that includes reducing the risks of electric shock
upon Motors Maintenance personal due to energized space
heaters, updating the standard to be in-line with the industry
current IEEE 841-2009 new standard, and aligning with SAES-P-
100 (Basic Power System Design Criteria) voltage levels.
(1) Note to Purchaser: It may not be possible for some manufacturers to accommodate this requirement because of space
constraints. Also, since these motors are generally mass produced, requiring space heaters may delay delivery and add
cost. Space heaters are required for 75 kW (100 HP) & above.
