1. Describe a solution.

2. Differentiate properties of saturated,

unsaturated and supersaturated solutions.

3. Solve concentrations of solutions (% by

mass or % by volume)
Solution
❖ is a homogeneous mixture consisting of a solute and a
solvent.
Solution
❖ is one substance dissolving in another substance.
A solute is the component that dissolves in a
solvent.

The component in The component in

solution which is in solution which is in
large amount. small amount.
Types of Solution
Type Solute Solvent Examples
Carbonated drinks, dissolved oxygen in
Gas Liquid
water
Liquid
Liquid Liquid Vinegar, rubbing alcohol
Solid Liquid Salt solution, sugar solution
Gas Liquid Hydrogen in palladium, oxygen in copper
Liquid Liquid Mercury in silver (amalgam)
Solid Silver in gold (14 karat gold), zinc in copper
Solid Liquid (brass), carbon in iron (carbon steel), copper
in silver (sterling silver)
Gas Gas Gas Air
Completos Rekados Identify which is solute, solvent and the solution.

Completos Rekados Identify which is solute, solvent and the solution.
Solute Solvent Solution
4. D.

5% Acetic Acid 95% water 78% nitrogen

5. E.

22% Oxygen 42% Silver

6. F.

58% Gold 14karat Gold

❖ Generally, a solution is a liquid because this is its most
common form. Solutions in the biological system and
in the environment are in liquid form.

Examples:
Liquid solutions:
ethanol, in which water is the solvent and ethanol is
the solute are called aqueous solutions.

Solid solutions:
alloy, a mixture of elements that have an overall
metallic character.
❖ Soluble – is a qualitative description of substances that
have the ability to be dissolved in significant amounts
in a given solvent.
• soluble
• moderately soluble
• insoluble
are used to describe compounds in relation to a
given solvent.

soluble

insoluble
❖ Miscible – is a qualitative term to describe the solubility
of substances in a liquid-liquid and gas-gas systems.

Completely miscible

immiscible
Solubility
One way to identify concentration is to describe as unsaturated, saturated
and supersaturated.
Try Me!
Materials and equipment:
• Any glass container
• Sugar
• Water
• Spoon or spatula
Half fill the container with water. Add one spoonful of sugar then stir. What
happens to the sugar? Did you notice that it dissolved instantly? Keep on
adding sugar until none dissolves. You will know that you have reached this
point when no matter how much you stir the solution, excess crystal will
always settle at the bottom.
Solubility - amount of solute required to form a saturated solution.
Unsaturated solution – is one in which the amount of the solute is less
than the maximum amount of a solute that can be held.

Solubility
Saturated solution – is one in which the maximum amount of the solute
has been dissolved in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature and
where any more solute added will settle at the bottom.

Solubility
Supersaturated solution – A solution that contains more solute than a
saturated solution. Usually, this results in undissolved material that tends to
crystallize.

You can prepare this by

increasing the temperature
to dissolve the excess solute
and slowly cooling the
solution. Strawberry jelly

Dilute and Concentrated Solution
Concentrated solution –is one in which there is a large amount of
substance present in a mixture.

Dilute solution –is a solution that contains a small amount of the solute in
a given volume of solvent.
