MELC: Investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated solutions. (S7MT-Ic-2) Week 6

SOLUTIONS

 SOLUTION has two components: the solute and solvent

 SOLUTE is the component that dissolves in the solution or the component that comes in a lesser amount than the
other component.
 SOLVENT is the dissolving medium or the component that comes in greater quantity.

 Solubility refers to the maximum amount of solute that a given amount of solvent can dissolve at a given
temperature.
 For gases, an increase in pressure increases its solubility in liquid solvents. Increasing the temperature,
however, decreases the solubility of gases in liquids. Most solids have increased solubility in liquids at higher
temperature.
 The dissolution rate refers to how fast a solute dissolves in a solvent.
 Agitation, particle size, temperature, and amount of solute are the different factors that can affect the rate of
dissolution.
 The amount of solute dissolved in a given solvent is called the concentration of a solution. A concentrated
solution contains more dissolved solute than a diluted solution. A saturated solution contains the maximum
amount of dissolved solute, whereas an unsaturated solution contains less than the maximum amount of
dissolved solute. A supersaturated solution is formed when a saturated solution is heated to allow the
dissolution of additional solutes and then cooled slowly. The concentration of different solutions can be
expressed in terms of percent by mass, percent by volume, parts per million, and parts per billion.
