CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A. HISTORY

Book history There are various sources that reveal the history of the book. Initially,
the first book mentioned was born in Egypt in the 2400s BC after the Egyptians created
papyrus paper. The papyrus paper on which this writing was written was rolled up and the
scroll formed the first form of a book. There are also those who say books have existed since
the time of the Buddha in Cambodia because at that time the Buddha wrote down his
revelations on leaves and then published them over and over again. Centuries later in China,
scholars imparted their knowledge on cold sticks to become one. This affected the writing
system in China where the letters were written vertically, from top to bottom. Books made of
paper only existed after China succeeded in making paper in the 200s BC from the bamboo
base material discovered by Tsai Lun.

Paper brought many changes to the world. Muslim traders brought papermaking
technology from China to Europe in the early 11th century. This is where the paper industry
is advancing. Especially with the creation of the printing press by Johann Gutenberg in the
15th century, the development and distribution of books underwent a revolution. Paper that is
light and durable is gathered together and a book is created. Book lovers are usually called
bookworms.

B. PROBLEMS OF INTEREST IN READING AMONG THE COMMUNITY

The problem of reading interest is still a sufficient theme actually. This theme is often
used as a topic of scientific meetings and discussions by observers and experts who care
about the development of interests read in Indonesian. But the results of the scientific meeting
has not yet provided proper recommendations for development which is very important for
public interest in reading. The problem is that has been experienced by the Indonesian nation
until now is the existence of data based on research findings and demonstrated observations
that Indonesian people's interest in reading is still relatively low. There are several indicators
that show low interest in reading Indonesian society. The low reading culture is also felt for
students and students. Libraries in existing schools/campuses rarely used optimally by
students / students. So There are also public libraries in every city/district that are scattered in
this archipelago, visitors are relatively not so much. This This shows that Indonesian people
do not yet have culture read. So it's only natural that this nation's Human Resource Index
Indonesia is also low. (http://harikaryo.wordpress.com).

Efforts to foster interest in reading are not being carried out. The government through
the relevant institutions has launched the program interest in reading. It's just what the
government and institutions do private sector to foster interest in reading is not optimal.
Therefore that, so that the Indonesian people can catch up on the progress that has been
achieved by neighboring countries, it is necessary to foster an interest in reading from an
early age. Since childhood they began to be able to read. By growing interest in reading since
children are still early, it is expected that the culture of reading society Indonesia can be
improved.

Interest is considered important for humans, because interest is one of the factors that
helps and encourages humans to achieve their goals. Interest or attention is the focus or
concentration of all individual activities aimed at one or a group of objects. The object of
concern will be truly realized by the individual, and will be very clear to the individual
concerned. Furthermore, interest is one of the psychological factors that helps and encourages
individuals to move in achieving certain goals, accompanied by feelings. Interest is more
active which will cause individuals to pay more attention to the object of interest. The
absence of interest in a person towards an activity will lead to boredom. Because interest in
reading greatly influences children's reading habits and study habits, this element must
receive the attention of parents, teachers and educational institutions. (FA Wiranto, 2008, 93)

C. GETTING USED TO READING FROM AN EARLY AGE

Reading is very important for human life. Activity Reading books is a cognitive
activity that includes processes absorption of knowledge, understanding, analytical skills,
abilities synthesis, and evaluation ability. By getting used to reading then someone will have
broad insights, creativity open, high imagination, advanced and developing thinking as well
as being the forerunner of intelligent and human empowerment intellectual. Reading is a
manifestation of the nature of the learner. Very it is appropriate if the book is called a window
to the world and reading is future investment.

In developed countries like Japan, the reading movement has been initiated since 30
years ago.Japan implemented a 20 minute reading movement for mother and child. In this
movement a mother is recommended to read a 20 minute book for his son that can be
borrowed from the library general. There is no doubt about the progress Japan has made at
this point is the fruit of the Japanese government's hard work to build literacy culture that
starts from childhood.

In the Netherlands, the government is very serious about its business foster interest in
reading among children. Reading and writing It is a way of life and starts from an early age.
Even though small children have not been able to read, read fairy tales or stories before sleep,
is one of the important rituals for almost all Dutch children. The Dutch government
cooperates with libraries, playgrounds, kindergartens and elementary schools, organizes a
number of activities like reading that take place regularly. (asacinta.blogspot.com)

One of the neighboring countries, namely Australia, is growing interest in reading the
community by making children as the main target. Since its citizens were babies, the
Australian Government has introduce with the book, how every mother gives birth got a visit
from a government health agency to saw the mother's condition and brought the baby's first
book. The book made based on research, so it is very useful for babies.

The habit of reading from an early age turns out to be able to explore talent and
potential of children. Reading also stimulates reasoning and trains concentration. Not a few
successful people come from families who love reading. Therefore, it is important for parents
to appreciate the culture of reading in their children by giving examples. Parents can foster
interest in reading on children diligently tell stories and introduce story books adjusted for
age. What needs to be remembered, do not push children to read while his parents never
read.Because modeling is more effective than talking.

For some people, books can change someone's destiny. Something which is hard to
imagine that a child who is “too stupid,” drops out of elementary school, and had become a
hawker later put his name in a row of the most prominent scientists in earth. Many
discoveries are recorded in his name. he is Thomas Alva Edison. What made Edison smart?
Wrong one that makes him intelligent and successful in making various discoveries none
other than his passion for reading books. By reading books can change someone's life.
However, the fact is that many adults and children who have not made reading a habit.
We haven't made reading a necessity or a culture let alone children. Adults or children who
do not like to read is said to have occurred a process of duping. Cruelly again we are in the
middle preparing our children to suffer in future life ahead.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING
A. CONCLUSION

Indonesian people's reading interest, especially relative children low. They prefer to
seek entertainment on shows on TV, internet cafes, mall, play station or other entertainment
places compared to reading books in library. Interest in reading needs to be grown from an
early age. Since they have been able to read. Schools and teachers have not civilized students
to use the library as a resource learning. So students have very low appreciation of literary
works as well as books and other written works.

Early introduction of libraries to children is very important. Because starting from

knowing, they will be able to like what is there in the library especially if the facilities and
infrastructure are provided library adapted to the needs of children. So that they will make
better use of the library according to what what they need. And from there can appear their
love against the library. In addition to the introduction of parents, in the world Even in
schools, children must know the library and its benefits. Especially now that the government
has made it mandatory in schools there is a library and the statement is contained in Law no.
2 Article 35 of 1989 concerning the National Education System which states that every
school is obliged to have a library.

It would be better parents were also able to provide facilities such us as a collection of
relevant an up-to-date books, stationery, electronic devices, as well as adequate rooms and
furnitur as attractive as possible, including placing slogans or aphorism that could encourage
reading, or in other words create a library.
