Tagore and Gandhi have undoubtedly been the two outstanding and dominating figures of India in

the tradition of accepting life in the fullness thereof and going through it with song and dance.
Gandhi, more a man of the people, almost the embodiment of the Indian peasant represented the

round this single idea. In just ten lines of the poem, the poet says twice: Man better be; and life
perfect be. And to make better or life perfect, he advises one to lead a meaningful life of light - like
that of a lily. Thus the focus of the poem is clearly on making man better. To emphasize the point

w w
example of the oak and the lily are used. Hence, the title the noble nature suits the poem well. Nature
is considered the best teacher in the poem. The poem says that leading a meaningful life even for a
short while is worthier than leading a long life with neither charm nor value.

A: Mark Twain popularly known American writer, lecturer and also praised the greatest humanist of
the U.S. He is rightly called the Father of American Literature. The short story, 'The five boons of
life' is written by him. It is a parable with his characteristic twist at the end the main theme of the
story is the deceiving nature of human life.
The story portrays the downfall of a wretched and self conceited young man. When a fairy offered
the young man one of her five gifts among fame, love, riches, pleasure and death, he chooses
pleasure first. Pleasure makes him disappointed. His next choioce is love. He has spent his life
loving people who leave this world one by one leaving him in grief. Then he goes for fame
perceiving it to be something magnificial. But in reality it brings him shame. On having chosen
wealth later to decide his detractors, he becomes a pauper. Finally he realize that death is the only
gift which soothes him. He pleads with the fairy to grant him that invaluable gift but in vain. The
fairy has already given death to an innocent child. According to Mark Twain death is the only
eternal truth which becomes as a gift, when one transcends the fear of death.

b) Helping the old is as good as playing the game. Elucidate with reference to the story.
A: Arthur Mee was an English writer, journalist and also eminent educator. He was the editor of his
'My Magazine'. The story playing the game is written by him, taken from 'My magazine'. He
narrates a heart touching incident about a school boy Alan. Alan a school boy, was a cricket buff.
One day on his way to school, he saw a very old man walking slowly on the hilly road. The old man
said that he would be so much obliged if Alan could help him to see his home. Alan caught the Old
man's hand and supported him to walk. But the old man was very much weak and fell heavily on
the ground. At last, a kind hearted policeman took the old man to the destination. Alan reached his

school late. The policeman told the father about Alan's kind act. Alan's parents felt very much proud
of him and appreciated. His classmates cheered Alan for his kind gesture. Finally he got a bicycle
from his father as a gift. Alan was a kind natured boy. He thought that helping the old is as great as
playing game and a rewarding experience.

physically and mentally. They were selfish and greedy. The younger brother proposed to manage

bh
their financial activities by citing the elder brother's weakness. All of them are defective, yet, each
tried to outsmart the other. They planned to test their own vision by reading the inscription above

The oldest musical instrument in the world is the
drum mode initially in one of three ways. First frame
drums were made by stretching the skin over
bowl-shaped frames. Next, rattle drums were made
by filling gourds or skins with dried grains, shells or
rocks. Finally, tubular drums were made from
hollowed logs or bones covered with skins. Both
frame and tubular drums were stuck with the hand or
with beaters to produce sounds. In contrast, rattle
drums were shaken or scraped to make rhythmic
sounds. For thousands of years, drums have been
