CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review of literature and studies pertinent to and essential to

the completion of this study.

A. Related Literature

Trust is a fundamental element in various types of relationships, ranging from

personal to professional contexts. In the realm of romantic relationships, researchers

have examined the impact of trust on conflict resolution and relationship outcomes.

Kim et al. (2015) shed light on the disruptive role of low-trust partners on conflict

resolution in romantic relationships, highlighting its detrimental effects on the ability

to effectively resolve conflicts. Similarly, in the healthcare sector, trust has been

identified as crucial for promoting strong nurse-patient relationships, enhancing

patient outcomes, and improving satisfaction (Lonneman & Leslie, 2016).

Expanding the scope of trust beyond personal relationships, scholars have

explored its role in other domains. Meng (2015) investigated the significance of trust

in relationship development and performance improvement in civil engineering

projects, emphasizing its contribution to effective collaboration, communication, and

project success. In the healthcare sector, Okello and Gilson (2015) conducted a

systematic review highlighting the intricate interplay between trust, motivation, and

organizational dynamics, demonstrating the influence of trust relationships on staff

motivation.

Examining trust in organizational-stakeholder interactions, Schnackenberg and

Tomlinson (2016) introduced organizational transparency as a mechanism for

managing trust, emphasizing its role in building trust, enhancing communication, and

strengthening stakeholder relationships. Furthermore, Vanneste, Puranam, and

12

Kretschmer (2014) conducted a meta-analysis on trust in exchange relationships,

providing valuable insights into the dynamics of trust over time.

Drawing on these studies on trust in various relationship contexts, this

literature review aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by examining

the impact of trust on relationship satisfaction and stability in romantic partnerships

within the context of psychology/social sciences. By synthesizing and analyzing the

findings, this research aims to provide valuable insights that can inform the field of

Psychology/Social Sciences and enhance our understanding of the role of trust in

romantic relationships.

B. Theoretical Framework

This research looks at how trust affects romantic relationships' stability and

satisfaction in the context of psychology and social sciences. Relationships of all

kinds, including those that are personal, professional, and those involving

organizational stakeholders, depend on trust. The importance of trust in romantic

relationships for relationship success and conflict resolution has been highlighted by

extensive study. Conflict resolution procedures have been shown to be disrupted by

low levels of trust, which also has a detrimental influence on relationship dynamics

and the capacity to settle problems successfully. Trust has been found to be essential

in the healthcare industry for fostering excellent nurse-patient relationships, improved

patient outcomes, and raising patient satisfaction. Additionally, trust is essential for

successful collaboration, communication, project success, and employee engagement

in various professional contexts like organizational dynamics and civil engineering

projects. This study aims to add to the body of knowledge about trust in romantic

relationships by examining and synthesizing findings from studies done in diverse

relationship contexts. The results of this study may guide future therapies and

relationship-strengthening techniques, which would ultimately advance our

knowledge of the function of trust in romantic relationships.

C. Conceptual Framework

Independent Variables Dependent Variables

Impact of Communication Maintaining Trust in a
Romantic Relationship

Mediating Variables
Conflict Resolution
Communication

This study consist a two variable, Impact of Communication as independent

variables and maintaining trust in Romantic Relationship as dependent variables.

In conflict resolution and communication serve as potential mediating

variables, linking trust to the desired relationship outcomes. Trust is an important and

tender aspect of all relationships because it requires us to choose to be vulnerable and

courageous. When we have learned to distrust someone, it's usually because we've

come to understand that what we share with them or what's important to us is not safe

with that person.

The mediating factors are impact of communication, the maintaining trust in

relationships and also the conflict resolution communication. As a result both factors

influence how communication affects in our society.

14

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

A phenomenological study would be suitable to explore the lived experiences,

perspectives, and meanings attached to trust in romantic relationships. It would help in

understanding the effective strategies for maintaining trust, the specific behaviors and actions

individuals engage in, and how trust issues are navigated when faced with external stressors

or conflicts. Phenomenological interviews or focus groups can be conducted with senior high

school students to gather their subjective experiences and insights related to trust and

communication in their romantic relationships.

Sampling

As a sampling method, Snowball sampling can be used by starting with a few initial

participants who meet the criteria and then asking them to recommend other individuals who

may be interested in participating. The approach can be useful for reaching people who might

not be simple to reach through other channels, like couples who aren't actively looking to

participate in research.

Participants

In this methodology, the participants would be senior high school students in

Cabucgayan National School of Arts and Trades aged 17 to 18 years old who are currently

engaged in romantic relationships. To find a small group of senior high school students who

fit the bill and are willing to participate in the study by using snowball sampling.
15

Data Gathering Procedure

Semi-structured interviews were used as the main approach for gathering data. Create

a list of open-ended questions and guidelines in preparation to serve as a guide for the

interviews while giving participants the freedom to express their own special experiences.

Data Analysis

The interviews were transcribed, relevant units were coded, themes were found, and

the themes were then refined through a reduction process for the phenomenological study on

trust in romantic relationships. To gather insights into the lived experiences and viewpoints of

senior high school students in preserving trust, the themes were outlined along with

supporting evidence from the interviews. The research was cross-referenced with prior

material, then it was organized into topics and presented with its ramifications. The research

was conducted in an effort to offer useful insights on the study participants' trust-related

behaviors and methods.

Ethical Consideration

Assure participants that their identities and personal information will be kept

confidential. Use pseudonyms or assign codes to maintain anonymity when reporting the

data. Store any collected data securely and restrict access to authorized researchers only.

Be mindful of the potential emotional or psychological distress that discussing

personal experiences and relationship issues may cause. Provide resources and support

mechanisms to participants if they require assistance or further counseling.

16

CHAPTER IV

Results and Findings

The chapter present the analysis and interpretation of the provide data. Our primary

focus data analysis and interpretation was the information gathered from conducting

interviews various communication methods.

Research Findings

This study consists of a population comprising of six grade 11 students from STEM

and GAS Strand in Cabucgayan National School of Arts and Trades. Their participation in the

research aimed to explore their individual experiences in managing and sustaining trust

within romantic relationships.

The findings of the investigation reinforce the existing literature regarding the

influence of communication on the preservation of trust within a romantic relationship. The

results highlight that effective communication plays a vital role in maintaining trust between

partners, validating the importance of open and honest dialogue in nurturing and sustaining a

healthy romantic bond.

When interview one of the participants “What are some common things that can make

it hard for couples to communication well and how does that affect trust?” both participant

MC and EL mentioned that pride can cause problems in communications within romantic

relationships because it make it difficult to apologize, be open to feedback, listen to your

partner and prioritize the relationship over appearances. Overcoming pride is important for

healthy and fulfilling relationships.

In the following questions “How does talking and listening to each other help build

and maintain trust in a relationship?” participant EL answered that “both kamo open ha usa’t
17

usa para maka build ghap han trust, duwa kamo aware sa usa’t usa nga problema, para

magbubuligay kamo para masolbar ito na mga problema”.

All the participants stated that their personal experiences where poor communication

resulted in a breakdown of trust in a romantic relationship due to their sensitive feelings like

jealousy and overthinking too much.

This is also said by participant Gr “Trust means dere kana nagdududa, and dere ka

nag o-overthink, and okay la ha imo na nga dere nag u-update ha imo kon hain hiya kay

mayda naman kamo trust sa usa’t usa amo ito an meaning ha trust".

In summary, the research findings indicate that effective communication plays a vital

role in maintaining trust within romantic relationships. Overcoming barriers like pride,

actively listening, and addressing sensitive emotions are crucial for sustaining trust. Building

trust requires open dialogue and problem-solving together. By prioritizing communication,

couples can foster healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

Discussion of the Research

The research findings shed light on the significance of communication in managing

and sustaining trust within romantic relationships among Grade 11 students. The results

reinforce existing literature and provide valuable insights into the experiences and

perspectives of the participants.

One important aspect highlighted by the findings is the detrimental impact of pride on

communication and trust within relationships. Participants identified pride as a barrier to

apologizing, being open to feedback, and prioritizing the relationship over personal

appearances. This suggests that individuals need to actively work on overcoming their pride

in order to foster healthy and fulfilling relationships.

Furthermore, the research emphasizes the crucial role of talking and listening in

building and maintaining trust. Participants stressed the importance of open communication,
18

being aware of each other's problems, and working together to find solutions. This highlights

the need for couples to engage in effective dialogue, actively listen to each other, and

collaborate in problem-solving to strengthen the trust within their relationships.

The personal experiences shared by the participants demonstrate the real-life

implications of poor communication on trust. Issues such as jealousy and overthinking were

identified as contributing factors to the breakdown of trust. This highlights the vulnerability

of trust in the face of inadequate communication and the need for couples to address and

manage these sensitive emotions through effective communication.

In summary, the findings of this research provide valuable insights into the

experiences and challenges faced by Grade 11 students in managing and sustaining trust

within romantic relationships. The study reinforces the importance of effective

communication in nurturing trust, overcoming barriers like pride, and addressing sensitive

emotions. These findings can serve as a foundation for further research and interventions

aimed at improving communication skills and strengthening trust within romantic

relationships.
19
