Past simple tense

‫الزمن الماضي البسيط‬

1) When to use past simple tense?


-We use present simple tense to describe a completed action in a short way.

2) The structure of past simple:


-Subject + verb + d/ed/ied

3) What happens to the verb in past simple?


-The verb can change either partially or completely.

a) Regular verbs:
-With regular verbs we add (d/ed/ied) to the verb.

When to add (d)?


-We add (d) to the verbs that end with (e).

Example: to love→loved / to like→liked / to hate→hated

When to add (ed)?


-We add (ed) to the verbs that end with a consonant.

Example: to listen→ listened / to publish→ published

to help→ helped / to search→ searched

When to add (ied)?


- We add (ied) to the verbs that end with (y) and before it there is a consonant.

Example: to cry→ cried / to fly→ flied / to study→ studied

Exception:
- There is an exception with the verbs that end with (y), and it is when there is vowel before
the (y). In that case we add (ed).

Example: to play→ played / to enjoy→ enjoyed


b) Irregular verbs
- This type of verbs does not follow the usual rules of grammar.
Examples:

To make → made

To eat → ate

To drink → drank

To go → went

To do → did

Verb < to be > in the past:


I was We were

He was You were

She was They were

It was

Indicators of past simple:


- Yesterday

- A day (week / month / year) ago

- Last (week / month / year)

- In 2017 - In 2020 (the date must be in the past)

Exercise 01: put the verbs between brackets in the correct form:
1- We visited our grandparents last week.

2- I washed my car yesterday.

3- Mohamed accused Omar of stealing.

4- The bakery closed at 9:00 p.m.

5- She stood under a tree to shelter from the rain.

6- The child fell off his bicycle.


7) The plumber fixed the broken pipe.

8) The rain began falling.

9) The teacher admired the attitude of his students.

10) Amina spent all of her scholarship money on clothing.

Exercise 02: Put the verbs between brackets in the correct form:
Yesterday, I (to wake up) at 6:30 a.m. I (to take) a quick shower and (to brush) my
teeth. After that, I (to make) coffee and some eggs. Then, I (to get) dressed and (to comb) my
hair. At 7:45 a.m I (to feed) my cat and (to go) to work.
