SHORT ANSWER. Write the word or phrase that best completes each statement or answers the question.

Provide an appropriate response.

199) A student was trying to solve the problem 4x(3x - 6) = 0. The student knew that he or she should set 3x - 6 = 0
but was confused about whether or not he or she should set 4x = 0, or 4 = 0 and x = 0. How would you advise
this student?
0
Answer: Setting 4x = 0 is not a problem because x = = 0.
4

200) How could you solve the equation

(7x + 8)(8x - 2)(5x - 9) = 0? How many equations do you need to solve? What are their solutions?

Answer: Set each factor equal to 0 in turn, and solve. There would thus be three equations to solve. - 8 , 1 , 9
7 4 5

201) Why is 9 called a triple solution to the equation (x - 9)3 = 0?

Answer: (x - 9)3 = (x - 9)(x - 9)(x - 9), 9 is a solution to each of the 3 products.

202) A student is solving the equation s2 = 2 2 and has determined that s = 2. He or she has looked up the answer in
the back of the book and finds that s = -2 is also a solution. The student feels that this is a misprint. How would
you advise him or her?
Answer: 2 2 = (-2)2 = s2 are both solutions.

203) A student is solving the equation x2 = 6x This student has decided to divide both sides of the equation by x and
finds the solution x = 6. The student checks the answer in the back of the book and finds that x = 0 is also a
solution. The student feels that this is a misprint. How would you advise him or her?
Answer: Order of operations x2 - 6x = x(x - 6) ⇒ x = 0, x = 6 are solutions.

20
204) A student is trying to solve the equation (x + 8)(x - 4) = 6. The student has set x + 8 = 6 and x - 4 = 6 and found
that two solutions x = -2, x = 10. The student checks his or her results by plugging in his or her solutions into the
original equation and finds that they do not work. How would you advise him or her?
Answer: The equation needs to be set to zero in order to use the zero-factor theorem.

205) A student is told that there are two solutions to the problem 9x2 = 9x. The student can only find one; that is,
x = 1. How could you advise this student?
Answer: Zero is another factor.

206) A student is told that there are two solutions to the problem 5x2 = 9x. The student can only find one, namely,
9
x = . How can you advise him or her?
5
Answer: Zero is another solution.

Year Population (in millions of people)

1995 65
1996 65.5
1997 67
1998 69
1999 71.5

We used this data to develop the quadratic equation y = 0.373x2 + 0.165x + 65, which models the population of
the city y in millions in the year x, where x = 0 represents 1995, x = 1 represents 1996, and so on. Use the model

247) Brenda's teacher asks her to solve the following problem: "The product of two consecutive numbers is 210. Find
the numbers." Brenda knows that she must translate this problem into an equation. What equation could Brenda
write to represent this problem?
Answer: x(x+1) = 210

248) Tom's teacher asks him to solve the following problem: "The product of two consecutive even numbers is 168.
Find the numbers." Tom rewords the problem and translates to the following equation:

x(x + 1) = 168

Why is this equation not correct and what would the correct equation be?
Answer: Consecutive even numbers differ by 2. If the smallest number is named x, then the other number is x + 2
not x + 1 and the equation is x(x + 2) = 168.

249) Suppose you have to solve the following problem: "The length of a rectangle is 5 ft more than its width and its
area is 84 square feet. Find its width and length." Let x represent the width of the rectangle and translate the
problem into an equation. Do not solve the equation.
Answer: x(x + 5) = 84

250) Mark's teacher asked him to solve the following problem: "One leg of a right triangle is 7 m longer than the
other. The length of the hypotenuse is 13 m. Find the lengths of the legs." Mark translated the problem into the
following equation: (x2 + 7) + x2 = 132 . Why is this equation not correct and what would the correct equation
be?
Answer: If the length of the shorter leg is x then the length of the other leg is x + 7. Substituting into the
Pythagorean theorem a 2 + b2 = c2 gives (x + 7)2 + x2 = 132 .

251) Tina was asked to solve the following problem: "The product of two consecutive numbers is 90. Find the
numbers." Tina's solution is given below. Do you agree with her conclusion? If not, why not?

x(x + 1) = 90
x2 + x = 90
x2 + x - 90 = 0
(x + 10)(x - 9) = 0
x = -10 or x = 9

The pair of numbers is 9 and 10

Answer: There is nothing in the problem to suggest that the two numbers must be positive thus there is no reason
to discard the negative solution. There are two solutions: the pair of numbers is 9 and 10 or -10 and -9.

252) Write a problem in which the quadratic equation x(x + 3) = 108 must be solved in order to solve the problem.
Answer: Answers will vary. Possible answer is: "The length of a rectangle is 3 cm more than its width and its area
is 108 square cm. Find the length and width of the rectangle".

253) Jason is given the following information: "The shortest side of a triangle is 4 cm less than the middle side. The
length of the longest side is 13 cm." Jason claims that he can find the lengths of the two shorter sides by solving
the following equation:

x2 + (x + 4)2 = 132

What is wrong with his reasoning?

Answer: Jason obtained this equation by using the Pythagorean Theorem. However, we are not told that the
triangle is a right triangle so it is not appropriate to use the Pythagorean Theorem.

254) Maria's teacher asked her to solve the following problem: "One leg of a right triangle is 5 m longer than the
other. The length of the hypotenuse is 25 m. Find the lengths of the legs." Maria called the legs x and y and
translated the problem into the following equation: x2 + y2 = 252 . After that she was unsure of how to proceed.
Why is Maria's equation not very useful? Write the correct equation and find the solution to the problem
showing all the steps of your work.
Answer: Maria's equation contains two different variables and thus it cannot be solved. By using the information
about how the two leg lengths are related, it is possible to obtain an equation containing only one
variable.

x2 + (x + 5)2 = 252
x2 + x2 + 10x + 25 = 625
2x2 + 10x + 25 = 625
2x2 + 10x - 600 = 0
2(x2 + 5x - 300) = 0
2(x + 20)(x - 15) = 0
x = -20 or x = 15

A side length cannot be negative, so x = 15 and the leg lengths are 15 m and 20 m.

255) The height of an object after t seconds is given by the equation h = -16t2 + 5t + 3. When h = 0, solving for t
means finding the time when the object hits the ground. A student uses the quadratic formula and finds 2
solutions. One is negative and the other positive. Which solution makes sense? Which does not? Why?
Answer: The positive solution makes sense and the negative solution does not. The model represents time after the
object is launched, and negative time does not make sense in this context.

256) If an object is dropped, the distance it falls after t seconds is given by d = gt . A student is determining how
2
long it would take an object to fall 75 feet on planet x having gravity 19 ft/sec2. The student determines the two
150
solutions t = ± . Are both correct answers? Why or why not?
19
150
Answer: t = - gives negative time which is not correct.

Gutenberg™ electronic works
Professor Michael S. Hart was the originator of the Project
Gutenberg™ concept of a library of electronic works that could
be freely shared with anyone. For forty years, he produced and
distributed Project Gutenberg™ eBooks with only a loose
network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg™ eBooks are often created from several

printed editions, all of which are confirmed as not protected by
copyright in the U.S. unless a copyright notice is included. Thus,
we do not necessarily keep eBooks in compliance with any
particular paper edition.

Most people start at our website which has the main PG search
facility: www.gutenberg.org.

This website includes information about Project Gutenberg™,

including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new
eBooks, and how to subscribe to our email newsletter to hear
