OBJECTIVES IN THE CONDUCT OF

SCHOOL EARTHQUAKE DRILL

1. To ensure the safety of the students, teachers and staff during and
after a damaging earthquake;

2. To help school administrators and their disaster action group to design

a specific response plan of the school for earthquake;

3. To train teachers, school staff and students on how to practice proper

action and response during earthquakes; and

4. To test various elements of the response plan designed by the School

Disaster management Committee (SDMC)
RATIONALE OF EARTHQUAKE DRILL

It is important to orient people on earthquake preparedness in

order to be informed of what to do before, during and after an
earthquake. During an earthquake, school children are one of the most
vulnerable. As such, it is important for school administrators and teachers
to be informed on how to properly conduct an earthquake drill. Teachers
are the ones who guide the student. They are ones who will teach
students how to protect themselves. The conduct of an earthquake drill
requires planning and designing of evacuation procedure, as well as
orienting teachers and ultimately the students on how to do earthquake
drill. It only requires planning and constant practice.

The conduct of an earthquake drill is different from a fire drill. In a

fire drill, the sound of the siren/bell means that the fire is ongoing and all
occupants of the building are to immediately evacuate to ensure their
safety. In an earthquake drill, the sound of a siren/bell indicates that a
strong shaking is ongoing and the level of ground shaking prevents people
to stand and move around. To do so can cause injury to the person as
debris can fall and hurt him/her. Ones are not supposed to get out of the
building while the shaking is ongoing.

SIMULTANEOUS EARTHQUAKE DRILL

An earthquake drill which conducted last September 7, 2023 at 2:00 in the

afternoon was indeed a very successful drill. It was spearheaded and implemented
by Mr. Danrex P. Angub the School DRR Coordinator.
On September 07,2023 by 7:30 in the morning an orientation and planning
were made in preparation for the upcoming drill. During this time, the SDRRM
Coordinator oriented the school teaching staff on different things in preparation for
the drill to be conducted. He discussed with them the DO’s and DONT’s where there
is earthquake, the school evacuation plan and the evacuation route for everybody to
follow. Also, he gave some sort of advices and important instructions to all teachers
who are in attendance.
By 2:00 in the afternoon, the actual earthquake drill happened. During the
drill, student-participants and teachers did perform “Duck, Cover and Hold”
technique during the alarm phase and waited for the bell to stop before evacuating
to the designated evacuation area. During evacuation phase, all the participants
followed their designated route to evacuation area; most of them walk faster than
normal while others run. In the evacuation area, headcount was performed by the
teacher-adviser and the latter reported it to the evacuation to the SDRRM
coordinator.
In the drill, it took more or less 5 minutes for the student-participants to
vacate their classroom buildings and reach the designated evacuation area. In the
area, student-participants just stayed as is until they are instructed to go back to
their respective classrooms.
There were 101 students, 8 teachers and One Administrative Assistance
who participated in the earthquake drill and so far, there was no horrible incident
observed during the drill.
By The successful earthquake drill was evaluated the school head
Mr.Restie F. Gupana. From his observations, he found out that students only have
two survival kit/ first aid kit and the assigned first aid team should act appropriately.
Thus during the evaluation phase, these observations were being addressed to and
hopefully, students should have their survival kit by section so that in the next drill
they are ready to bring with them their survival kit.
