PROGRESSIVISM Progressivists believe that individuality,
progress, and change are fundamental to
one’s education.
Believing that people learn best from what
they consider most relevant to their lives,
progressivists center their curricula on the
needs, experiences, interests, and abilities
of students.
CONSTRUCTIVISM Is the theory that says learners construct
knowledge rather that just passively take
in information.
As people experience the world and
reflect upon those experiences, they build
their own representations and incorporate
new information into their pre-existing
knowledge (schemas).
 The curriculum for this philosophical school of
PERENNIALISM education aims to develop the learner’s rational
and moral powers and to let them use their
reasoning skills and higher faculties according to
their passion and appetites.
 The Perennialist classroom are “centered around
teacher”. The teachers do not allow the students’
interest or experiences to substantially dictate
what they teach. They apply whatever creative
techniques and other tried and true methods
which are believed to be most conductive to
disciplining the student’s minds.
EXISTENTIALISM
 This school of philosophy deals with the
development of the learner as a whole person
and not just the development of the mind. They
do this by helping the students understand and
appreciate themselves as unique individuals
who accept complete responsibility for their
thoughts, feelings and actions.
 The teaching-learning process is self-paced and
self-directed. It encourages an open honest
individual relationship between the learner and
the teacher. The teachers use the values
clarification strategy.
 Focuses on the idea that all behaviors are
BEHAVIORISM learned through interaction with the
environment.
 Behaviorism emerged in 1898,in easily stage
of developmental psychology. It was year that
Edward Thorndike created his learning theory
using a cat and a box.
 PRINCIPLE OF BEHAVIORISM - all
behaviors can be explained by conditioning
which occurs through interaction with the
environment.
ESSENTIALISM Asserts that common and essential ideas
and skills belonging to a certain culture
should be taught to all citizens at the same
levels at especially primary school level.
Ensures that the accumulated wisdom of
our civilization as taught in the traditional
academic discipline is passed from teacher
to student.
PHILOSOPHY
LINGUISTIC
Beliefs that language is at the root of all
learning.
How language is actually used, taught,
and developed in everyday discourse.
Beliefs that the language is the key to
understand the world.
