METHODOLOGY
Opening Activity
Introductory Activity
The teacher will present to the students a scenario regarding the different
( 5 minutes)
outfit that the students wear each day of the week.
Individual Activity:
Activity
The teacher will let the students make a table. Fill in the table with different
(5 minutes)
outfit that each student possibly wears each day of the week.
From the given activity, the students will be asked with the following questions:
1. What have you observed about the table that you make?
Analysis
2. If it’s Sunday, what outfit will you wear?
(5 minutes)
3. How about Monday? Tuesday? and etc.
4. From the activity given, what do you think is our topic for today?
Abstraction The teacher discussed the Functions and Relations and their Examples.
(15 minutes)  Relation – is a set of ordered pairs. The domain of a relation is the set of first
coordinates. The range is the set of second coordinates..
 Sets- collection of well-defined and distinct objects, called elements that share
a common characteristic (Grade 7 Mathematics LM, 2013).
 Ordered Pair – is a pair of objects taken in a specific order. An ordered pair is
written by listing two members in a specific order, separating them by a
comma and enclosing the pair in parentheses (Aggarwal, 2014).
 Domain – domain is the set of all x or input values.
 Range – range is the set of all y or output values.
 Function – is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds to
exactly one element of the range.
Here are some examples of functions through SET (ROSTER NOTATION),
MAPPING AND GRAPHING IN COORDINATE SYSTEM.
1. Mapping - A mapping shows how the elements are paired. It is like a flow chart
for a function, showing the input and output values. Any of the x-values (domain)
should not have more than one pair to consider them function.
Examples:

Functio
n Function Not
Function Function Function
2. SETS – roster notation or the list of elements, separated by commas and
enclosed in curly braces. It is important to note that the x-values should occur
more than once.
Example: { (2 ,3) ,(4 , 5) ,(5 , 6) , 6 ,7 ¿ }
Note that x-value is repeated. Hence, the set is function.
{ (3 ,3) ,( 4 , 5),(5 , 5) ,5 , 4 ¿ }
Note that x-value 5 is repeated. Hence, the set is NOT a function.
3. GRAPHING – functions can be determined in graphing also. We can use a
special kind of test which is called the Vertical Line Test (VLT). The method is to
create imaginary vertical line across the graph, if the line hits exactly one point on
the graph, then it is a function.
Example:

4. TABLE OF VALUES - is a set of ordered pairs usually resulting from

substituting numbers into an equation (relation).
Example:
Input, x 1 2 3 4
Output, y 2 5 10 17
 Identify the input and output values. Check to see if each input value is
paired with only one output value. If so, the table represents a function.
5. EQUATION - A function is an equation that has only one answer for y for every
x. A function assigns exactly one output to each input of a specified type. If
the exponent of y is 1, then the equation is FUNCTION. If the exponent of y
is 2 or more than 2, then the equation is NOT a FUNCTION.

Examples: 2 x+ 6 y=7; FUNCTION 5 x+ 4 y =7 ; NOT FUNCTION
y=3 x +6 ; FUNCTION 2
2 x +8 y =5 ; FUNCTION

Practice Exercise 1.1
Application A. Indicate whether each table defines a function. (page 7)
(15 minutes) B. Indicate whether each set defines a function. Find the domain and range of the
function. (page 8)
C. Indicate whether each graph is the graph of a function.(page 8)
D. Determine which of the equations define a function. (page 9)
Function Relay Race:
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups. Each team must solve a
Assessment function-related problem before passing the baton to the next team. The teacher
(10 minutes) will give only 2 minutes to finish their task. Each team will have 10 points score if
they got the correct answer.
