GENERAL MATHEMATICS

LESSON 1: FUNCTIONS
Function
• It is a relation in which each element of the domain
corresponds to exactly one element of the range.

Relation
• It is a set of ordered pairs.
Example
Determine whether the given table of values are function
or not.
x 1 2 3 4 Function
y 2 3 4 5

x -1 0 1
y 0 ±1 0 NOT a Function
Example
Determine whether the given set of order pairs are
function or not.

1. f = {(1 , 8) , (2 , 7) , (3 , 6) , (4 , 5)} Function

2. g = {(1 , 2) , (2 , 4) , (3 , 6) , (4 , 8)} Function
3. h = {(1 , 1) , (1 , 2) , (2 , 2) , (3 , 3)} NOT a Function
Example
Determine whether the relationship given in the mapping
diagram is a function.

Function Function
Vertical Line Test
A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical
line intersects the graph at most once.
Example
Determine whether the given graph is a function or not.

Function NOT a function

Example
Determine whether the given equation is a function or not.

1. y = 2x + 1 Function
2. + =1 NOT a Function
3. +y-4=0 Function
4. y = - 3x + 2 Function

PIECEWISE
FUNCTIONS
GRADE 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS
Learning Target:
• Evaluate piecewise function
• Sketch the graph of the given function
PIECEWISE
FUNCTION
• It is a function that is defined by two or more equations where
each equations applies to certain interval over a specified
domain.
Example
Given the piecewise – define function.

Find f(0) and f(-3).

Open or Solid point?
Tell whether the following is an open or solid point.

1) x>7 OPEN
2) x – 1 23 SOLID
3) 5y < - 3 OPEN
4) - 2x + 3 > - 5 OPEN
5) -8 -y–4 SOLID
Example
