Unit I : Functions

Lesson 1 : Representing and Identifying

Functions

First Quarter 1st Semester

August 4, 2021

Mr. Danny G. Damian

Definition of Functions
- A rule of correspondence or relationship
between two variables such that each value
of the first variable is paired with exactly
one value of the second variable.

- When the given ordered pair is a function

then it is a relation.

2
Domain and Range of
Functions
 The domain is the set of
permitted x values or variable x
(inputs), simply the first element

 The range is the set of found

values of y or variable y
(outputs), simply the second
element

3
Representing Functions
Ordered Pairs

Graphs (using vertical line test)

Equations

4
Function representing in
ordered pairs
 It is a pair of numbers or coordinates
arranged according to their position
in the number line. They are usually
enclosed in parenthesis.

Example : (-1,3), (1,5), (3,7)

5
Identify the given ordered
pairs if it’s a function or not a
function
Examples Answers
1. A = 1,2 , 2,3 , 3,4 , 4,5 1. A is a function

2. B = 1,1 , 2,2 , 3,3 , 4,4 2. B is a function

3. C = 1,0 , 0,1 , −1,0 , 0, −1 3. C is not a function

4. D = −2,4 , −1,1 , 0,0 , 1,1 , 2, −4 4. D is a function

6
Function representing in
table
 The table rows or columns display the

corresponding input and output values.

Example: x y
1 2
3 4
5 6
7 8

7
Identify the given table if it’s a
function or not a function
x y x y x y
1 1 1 2 -2 4
2 2 2 3 -1 1
3 3 3 4 0 0
4 4 4 5 1 1

x y x y 1. Function
1 0 -2 2 2. Function
0 1 2 4 3. Function
4. Not a function
-1 0 -2 6
5. Not a function
0 -1 2 8

8
Function representing
in Mapping Diagram
Examples
First Mapping Diagram
- Function

Second Mapping Diagram

- Not a Function

9
Function representing in
graph (vertical line test)
 A graph of a mathematical
relation is a function if any vertical
line drawn passing through the
graph intersects the graph at
exactly one point.

10
Examples

A Function

11
Identify the given graph if it’s
a function or not a function

a. A Function

b. A Function

c. Not a Function

12
Function representing
in equations
 Another way to represent a
function is using an equation. In
this representation, we basically
just put our rule into equation
form.

13
Identify the given equation if
it’s a function or not a
function
1. y = x 1. Function
1
2. y = 2. Function
3

3. y = 𝑥 2 3. Function

4. y = 𝑥 4. Function

5. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 1 5. Not a Function
