Activities
1. Drill/Review Activity Name: Color Coded – (Inquiry-based Approach)
 Mechanics
 The teacher presents a box with different
colors of paper.
 Each paper contains terms commonly used in
research.
 Once the music plays the box will be passed
through the class.
 When the music stops, the student holding
the box will pick a color and read the term so
that s/he will give its meaning.
2. Motivation Activity Name: Wordplay Extravaganza (Inquiry-based
Approach)

Mechanics
 The class will be divided into 2.
 The class will form at least 5 derivations from
the source word given.
 They will give the definitions of 5 derived
words.
 The first group who finishes the task wins.

3. Presentation of The teacher posts on the board and/or flashes on screen the

Activity Name: Definitional Kaleidoscope
Mechanics:
 The teacher will divide the class into 3.
 Each group has an assigned task.
 The class is only given 5 minutes to finish the task.
 The group who finishes first will gain a privilege to
choose the order of presentation.

Group 1: Pandemic
Directions: Give the expanded definition of the word
‘Pandemic’ using cause and effect.
Group 2: Empathy
Directions: Give the expanded definition of the word
‘Empathy’ through providing descriptions.

Group 3: Art
Directions: Give the expanded definition of the word ‘Art’
through giving examples.

(The groups present their output.)

ABSTRACTION

Expanded or extended definition of words recognizes the

meaning a word may take through the use of cause and
effect, providing descriptions and giving examples.

Approaches in Expanding Definitions of Words

 Using Cause and Effect

If a term refers to an event, giving the causes or effects helps
to explain it. The details of such definition answer the
questions “Why did it occur?” and “What are its effects?”

 Providing Descriptions
The parts of the subject are listed; the subject is described in
terms of how it is perceived by one’s senses. For instance,
one can write an expanded definition by stating the texture,
color, smell, shape, and sound of a particular thing.

 Giving Examples
Providing examples to readers gives them a concrete idea of
the meaning of a word or term. Through the examples, a
concept that may be unfamiliar to the readers is elaborated.
 IV. APPLICATION Activity Name (Ticket): "Beyond Borders:
Illuminating the Triad of Economy, Patriotism, and
Nature" (Multi-disciplinary Approach)

Mechanics:
 The class is divided into 3.
 Each group has different assigned word.
 Through a speech the groups should provide
an expanded definition of their assigned word.
 The groups should choose 1 representative to
deliver their speech based from their assigned
word.

Group 1: Economy
Group 2: Patriotism
Group 3: Nature
V. EVALUATION Directions:
Give the expanded definitions of the following words/terms
using different approaches or a combination of approaches in
writing definitions. (Integrative/ Inquiry-based Approach)

VI. ENRICHMENT/ Directions:

ASSIGNMENT Choose three Mathematical Terms and write an expanded
definition of each one. Write your answers on notebook.
