Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:


As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.

Let Us Learn

Before we start, I would like to know how far you know about Philippine
Theater. Specifically, it seeks to achieve the learning competency Choreograph
the movements and gestures needed in the effective delivery of an
original performance A10PR-IVf-g-5;
Improvise accompanying sound and rhythm needed in the
effective delivery of an original performance A10PR-IVf-g-6.
And we will focus our learning objectives with the following:

1. identify selected Philippine theater groups;


2. improvise appropriate sounds or rhythmic accompaniment
inspired by a performance in the Philippine theater; and
3. choreograph own movement or gestures with the use of your
improvised sound and rhythm.

Philippine Theater Groups


Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) is a theatrical
association of artists and educators, founded by Cecile Guidote-Alvarez in
April 7, 1967. It is known for creating performances that from Philippine
myths and legends, to commentaries that mirrors and reflects the current
social and political issues. Notable performances are (e.g. Caredivas,2011;
Pamana, 2013; Rak of Aegis, 2014)

Tanghalang Pilipino envisions raising Philippine theatre to heights


of professional and artistic excellence, dedicated to developing and training
actors, playwrights and designers with special emphasis in the production
of original Filipino plays. (e.g. Ibalong, Noli, William)
Repertory Philippines, one of the most respected theater companies
in the country, was founded 1967 by a handful of Filipino artists on the
initiative of theater director Zenaida Amador, together with actress Baby
Barredo, Amador established Repertory Philippines. (e.g. Little Women,
Alice in Wonderland, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino). Lea Salonga, in
fact, started her career as a child actress in productions of Repertory
Philippines.

Trumpets are known for their grand production of originally written


musical plays which focus on good values for children and the whole family.
(e.g. Joseph the Dreamer, N.O.A.H, The Bluebird of Happiness)

THEATER-RIFIC!!!

Direction: Below are the steps to create your own version of theater play.
Follow instructions carefully.

1. Choose a musical from a Philippine theater group (whether discussed


above or others) and select a song from their performance and
improvised a sound or rhythmical accompaniment from it using any
materials found in your home.

2. Create your own movements or gestures from the improvised sound you
have made.

3. Create a short video of your performance, minimum of 1 (one) minute
and 30 (thirty) seconds. Just include the 1st verse and chorus of your
chosen song or it depends upon your creativity on what part of the song
will work for this activity. You can use (1) mobile application (e.g.
Kinemaster, Power Director, CapCut) to create a video or any video
editor app installed in your android phone. Post your output on our
facebook page.

Let Us Remember

• Other Philippine theater groups are also staging original and


adapted plays and musical productions, primarily in English.
• PETA, Tanghalang Pilipino, Repertory Philippines, and Trumpets
are one of the few prominent theater performing groups in the
Philippines.
• The multi-awarded theater actress and singer, Lea Salonga, now an
international stage superstar, began her career as a child actress
in the productions of Repertory Philippines.
